Revealing the full extent of controlled opposition within a party is intended to demoralize actual interparty radicals while fostering justified paranoia and division among the ranks, also signals to other opportunists hiding in the weeds to come out and play

If Dean Preston had a socialist or competent bone in his body, he'd condemn the endorsement and start messaging around party unity and independence
