What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

Alternatively. Get Adnausem

It is built on top of ublock origin and will "click" on the adverts behind the scenes and make advertisers think you like a product messing with your advertising profile.

It also has a nice AdVault so you can see what advertisers are trying to push onto you.

Step 1 is critical because ad blockers on Chrome (for obvious reasons) have some limitations. Even the developer of uBlock origin recommends Firefox: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-Origin-works-best-on-Firefox

Adblock Plus sold themselves out so fucking bad lmao

If you're going to spend €40, you might as well get a Raspberry Pi and setup a PiHole. You cam also run your own Mastodon server and Lemmy instance on it if you set them all using Docker.

Just get uBlock Origin instead. Years ago I made the switch and never looked back!

I believe what they're referencing is sites that require you disable your ad blocker to access; they're saying you will be able to bypass those gates while keeping your ad blocker enabled

Still enshitification though. Fuck everything about this

Why the fuck are people still using adblock? They did a similar thing many years ago already, which is when ublock properly took off.

Because people don't know
