I assume !newcommunities@lemmy.world is for just that, and promoting new instances is unacceptable there. Where is an appropriate place to advertise a new instance?

Asking for one that is not my own. Decentralization is cool and I literally just found out about the existence of https://fanaticus.social/, a sports instance, from checking the !olympics@sh.itjust.works sidebar. I'd like to help this sports instance get attention and bolster its existing communities. I don't know where to go besides finding big preexisting sports communities and mentioning its existence there.

I think it's okay to promote instance on !newcommunities@lemmy.world, especially if they are thematic as fanaticus.social

I am a bit confused. Why not just promote the communities in the instance?

There's a lot. I do not want to spam !newcommunities@lemmy.world, and they're also not new, although I know not-new-but-still-small communities have been allowed to get posted before. Now that you mention it, I could probably just make a few posts or one giant post listing related communities together…

@Elevator7009@kbin.run

@rglullis@communick.news

I can see why the confusion. I mean it called it new on the post but then in this coment you say they are also not new.

Alright. I actually have no idea as to the age of the instance, but I am pretty sure it is new to most people on the Fediverse. I would also like to know the protocol for promoting communities in general, although at the time when I typed this I was thinking "new in age". I never should have put the word "new" in my post. Sorry.

To be honest, the community could just be renamed "community promotion", whatever the age of the community is.

I've posted about old communities in the past, mods never complained

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca is also intended for this purpose. You can promote any community or instance at any point, as long as you don't promote it too often :)
