TIFU, I 26M applied to a “Post renovation” cleaning job. The pay and flexibility was really enticing so I applied and was interviewed. The first red flag I missed was the interview being solely over Microsoft teams chat and no phone call. Second was how quickly they accepted my application and started on boarding. My dumb butt thought they were eager to get me on for the projects they had going in my town so I filled out the esign documents and w4. I checked out linked in and the Utah llc look up and things looked legit in that sense. But what tipped me off was when they conveniently wasn’t able to hire a painter and plumber so the “client” sent a check via mail for nearly 5 grand. So today I called the so called client that was the sender of the check and they have been a victim of at least dozen fraud cases so far. I’ve frozen my credit with two of the three credit bureaus. Waiting on transunion to get their site back up cause I’m at work right now. STUPID ME
TL;DR fell for a job scam and compromised my personal data.
