We learn something new every day. This is a community dedicated to informing each other and helping to spread knowledge.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Thanks for the help, Mexico. Way more helpful than Bush was.

[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Did you know the drinking age in Louisana was 18 until Katrina hit? Then Bush and the government at large told them if you want assassitance raise you drinking age to 21.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

That’s in order to receive federal highway money if I recall correctly. Probably desperately needed that money right after Katrina though so that checks out. Was still trivial to drink underage when I was there years and years ago

These damn Mexicans coming over the border and providing disaster relief! This is Carter's/Clinton's/Obama's/Biden's/Harris's America!

Doing the jobs real Americans don't want.

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sad, because I'd love to have a job in disaster relief

What country are you living it?

edit: Are you of age to work for or volunteer for the list of groups and organizations above?

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

US I was denied financial aid for fall semester because my legal partner makes too much money.

Edit: Oh yeah I'm old. Kinda don't know how useful I'd be to any of these organizations honestly.

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, well what's stopping you from asking or trying?

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Debt, but short of that you're probably right. Thanks for the list 🙂

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You're welcome.

I'd still check to see if you can do any volunteering remotely. Maybe one of these non-profits or organizations could use someone to gather information about key things for them. Or perhaps they need someone to make some calls for them, verify locations/records/data points/contact information, etc.

Dey derrka durr!

[–] K1nsey6@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cuba responded before anyone else did with food, aid supplies, and doctors, and were promptly turned away by the US.

[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Not calling you a liar or anything but can you source that? I love to go down rabbit holes and I think it would be an interesting read. Thank you in advance if you respond.

[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the link never knew that.....and will say that is kind of fucked up..

[–] K1nsey6@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cuba has always been the first to respond to international emergencies with medical drs and aid. They have more doctors per capita than any other country in the world

[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You may not know this and thats ok but do you know how much they will pay a nurse to help people out in Cuba? As a traveling nurse am generally interested.

[–] K1nsey6@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I have no idea

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

Call me naive, but I think, that's what neighbors should do. Viva la humanity!

[–] caboose2006@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Honestly it's the best use for a country's military. Send .5% out to actually, idk, help people.

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wait till you learn the history of the national guard

(Spoiler: they were thugs hired by robber barrons used to murder striking workers)

[–] caboose2006@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And the Marines were the personal union busters of plantation owners in central America.

[–] tastysnacks@programming.dev 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And Hawaii. Well, kingdom busters.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Well, if Hawaii didn't want to get invaded, it shouldn't have put itself in an ideal defensive location for the USA in the pacific, it's their fault really

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 months ago

Huh. So they were sending their best.

Al sonoro rugir de el cañón
