Let me just start with I'm an idiot, I know...

Tuesday last week, I decided to grill some hotdogs for lunch on the grill, they turned out great by the way. While I've had this grill I never use the side burner, I always use the 4 burners under the lid. For shits and giggles, I wanted to see if it worked, well it does. Hot dogs get done, roll the grill back into the basement, and enjoy dinner.

Fast forward to Saturday morning, my wife and I both wake up with a headache, brush it off as cold season is starting up, no other incidents rest of the day that were abnormal, headache eventually went away.

Sunday morning comes, both of us wake up and we both have that same headache, chug some water, headache eventually goes away. Carry on through out the day, my 9 month old son takes a rougly two hour nap (looking back now, it's terrifying), after he wakes up me and the wife go out in town and run some errands for about 3 hours.

Once we get home, we open the front door, were hit with a LP gas smell strong. I've seen enough ring door bell cameras of houses exploding to know to get the fuck out of Dodge when that smell is around in an open area.

The house were in does have a external LP tank for gas logs, that's the first thing that goes to my mind. I ride up to the local fire department which is a 30 second drive, tell them what's going on. They ride down with there detector and it's going off like crazy just inside the door, I tell them I think it might be the gas logs or something related to that.

They do their rounds opening windows, bringing a big fan in to air out the house until the house is at safe levels. After they leave, I call the gas supplier on the tank, and they come out to inspect the house to find the potential leak, nothing can be found in any of the lines, or at the tank.

The technician turns the valve off at the tank, and does one more final walk through. He's checking the gas wall heater in the basement where the readings are the strongest, using his instrument he walks through the entire basement trying to find where it's reading the strongest.

In the corner buried behind some chairs after some garage cleaning on Saturday is my grill. The gas tech moves the grill, checks the valve, it's wide open. The side burner, is on....

The technician looks at me like I'm the biggest idiot, rightfully so. We turn the tank off, and the side burner off, fan the area for a min, no more high level readings. Tech packs his stuff, and leaves.

Learning lesson for sure, just glad I didn't explode the house or kill my family and myself.

TL;DR: Left my side burner on my grill turned on with the gas tank also wide open for about 4-5 days, came into the house yesterday smelling LP gas, fire department came aired the house, and gas company tech came and determined the leak was from me leaving the grill on filling the entire house at unsafe levels of LP gas.
