Not requiring an email is going to increase the moderation workload on the admins since it will become a prime target for spammers and trolls, and if not adequately moderated the instance might get defederated from the major instances.

Downside: People will assume you're dutch. But as far as assumed nationalities go, the Dutch are pretty alright.

EDIT: Disregard, they seem to require email nowadays.
