Apple has unveiled its artificial intelligence-boosted iPhone 16, showing off the long-awaited phone hours after Chinese rival Huawei’s tri-fold phone began racking up orders.

“The next generation of iPhone has been designed for Apple Intelligence from the ground up. It marks the beginning of an exciting new era,” Chief Executive Tim Cook said at a product launch on Monday.

The iPhone 16 will use the new A18 chip and have an aluminium back, as well as a new customizable button that can be used for camera controls.

Huawei’s website showed on Monday that it had garnered more than three million preorders for its Z-shaped tri-fold phone. This underscores Huawei’s ability to navigate United States sanctions and solidifies its position against Apple in China, where consumers are hankering for more AI features and are willing to pay for them.

I’m not excited about the apple ai, but it will be interesting to see what can be done on device.

Was it security now that had the explanation of how they’re handling servers for this (or something) recently? That shit made me feel normal and not paranoid.

Just put physical keyboards back on the phones. I want to play videogames

Meanwhile I'm thinking about getting a Pi, sticking a cellular module on it, and 3-d printing a box for it to get away from all this bs.

I don't get the folding smartphone thing. We may have needed flip phones back before touchscreens became standard, but the joint seem like a mechanical point of failure if my clumsy ass drops my phone.

ikr, the only mechanical point of failure I want is a slide out physical keyboard.

"""AI""" is at least predictive text on cocaine and a cleanup tool for camera photos, for better and for worse, I feel like Apple will release the most practical and least annoying version of this.

but wtf is trifold???

The kind that lets you put a tablet size screen in your pocket sort of makes sense, except that they're all like 2 grand. But the kind that's just a regular size smartphone but it folds in half is truly pointless.

The one cool thing I've seen about folded phones was somebody who put theirs on a carabiner and attached it to his belt loop
