More than 100 Republican former national security and foreign policy officials on Wednesday endorsed Kamala Harris for president in a joint letter, calling Donald Trump “unfit to serve” another term in the White House.

Former officials from the presidential administrations of Republicans Ronald Reagan, George H W Bush, George W Bush and Donald Trump, as well as Democrats Bill Clinton and Barack Obama voiced their support for Harris, the Democratic nominee for president in this November’s election. They were joined by some former GOP members of Congress.

The letter said: “We believe that the president of the United States must be a principled, serious, and steady leader.”

It went on: “We expect to disagree with Kamala Harris on many domestic and foreign policy issues, but we believe that she possesses the essential qualities to serve as president and Donald Trump does not. We therefore support her election to be president.”

This should be the biggest sign to everyone that the democratic party is now basically the same as the republican administrations from two of our biggest war criminals and evil people in history. Reagan laid the seeds for all of this and Bush Jr was considered the worst president in our modern history until trump.

It is not good that dick fucking Cheney is endorsing Kamala Harris.

This is great or whatever but all that matters is that his followers will vote for him regardless of how unfit he seems or is. They just don't care at this point and you're not going to change their minds. Everyone else has to vote and hopefully Kamala will win and the Republican controlled electors won't vote Trump even if their state vote Kamala.

You're right, of course, which is dismal, but I guess it will at least be on the record that we knew? That we saw it coming?

Ex-

Yeah that tracks. Real brave when they don't have skin in the game.

[–] lemmeout@lemm.ee 21 points 21 hours ago

Although I agree with you to some level, I don't think it's totally fair to say they don't have skin in the game. These people could have easily stayed silent for that potential job offer, an extra connection, or some potential to make more money.

Unless, they have somehow more to gain from endorsing Harris. But idk. Looks sincere to me.

The left and progressives also feel heard here

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 22 hours ago

I'm waiting for Trump to complain about how Republicans don't support Trump and how if you're a Trump voter, you're no Republican.

Who would have guessed that they were all communist, fascist, Marxist RINOs?

Obviously these former elected officials, military leaders, national security experts, etc from every administration in the last 40 years are all just trying to destroy America.

They're just supporting the same right wing Republican policies they have supported all along, the Dems just represent that viewpoint now.

Oh how very nice of them. Just really warms my heart. I wonder why currently serving GOP’ers aren’t following suit?

[–] protist@mander.xyz 29 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Because then they'd get death threats and lose their jobs. Their jobs are more important than the country, apparently

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 16 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

To be fair most US politicians don't have the balls to sacrifice their jobs for what they feel is right. Which is exactly the problem.

Imagine an American Cincinnatus.

James K. Polk? Other than that...

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 20 hours ago

There is a mayor that came out against Trump early in the election, I think even before Biden dropped out.

I am not aware of any Republican who are running for an elected office who have come out against Trump.

Because the Dem party is the Republican party of yesterday, not of today.

In 2038+ when they are the ex Republicans and Democrats have "compromised" their way to the current Republican parties position, they'll be there.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 12 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

This is a popular talking point, but not at all the case. If you compare the Democratic Party platform and its membership to any time in the last 50 years, you're going to find today's party is significantly more progressive.

The "Republican Party of yesterday" was the fucking Moral Majority. The Democratic Party is absolutely nothing like the "Republican Party of yesterday."

Tell that to the immigrants the Dems keep fearmongering about.

Vice President Harris and Governor Walz believe in tough, smart solutions to secure the border, keep communities safe, and reform our broken immigration system. As Attorney General of California, Vice President Harris went after international drug gangs, human traffickers and cartels that smuggled guns, drugs, and human beings across the U.S.-Mexico border. As Vice President, she supported the bipartisan border security bill, the strongest reform in decades. The legislation would have deployed more detection technology to intercept fentanyl and other drugs and added 1,500 border security agents to protect our border. After Donald Trump killed the border deal for his political gain, she and President Biden took action on their own — and now border crossings are at the lowest level in 4 years, their administration is seizing record amounts of fentanyl, and secured funding for the most significant increase in border agents in ten years. As President, she will bring back the bipartisan border security bill and sign it into law. At the same time, she knows that our immigration system is broken and needs comprehensive reform that includes strong border security and an earned pathway to citizenship.

How is this not complete "they're bringing drugs over our border, some I assume are very fine people" rhetoric? But it's worse, because now this is the position of the "leftist" party.

When the "leftist" party is right wing on immigration, the right has to seperate themselves somehow, so now the ratchet clicked and Trump's calling for pogroms.

The "Republican Party of yesterday" was the fucking Moral Majority. The Democratic Party is absolutely nothing like the "Republican Party of yesterday."

The Republican party of yesterday was the Republicans of yesterday who are now endorsing the Democrats, because the Democrats best represent their ideology, otherwise they would be endorsing someone else.

Argue it all you want, they aren't secret leftist heroes.

So is this helping or hurting Harris?

[–] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago

Being recognized as the only sane choice by people across the political spectrum and by nonpartisan organizations that rarely if ever endorse presidential candidates is generally going to be helpful for a campaign.

While there are plenty of people on Lemmy acting like this is a deal breaker, I highly doubt any of those people were ever going to vote for Harris.

And even if there is a nonzero number of votes lost to third parties or staying home because of this endorsement, those lost votes are almost certainly less likely to be in battleground states, and are only worth half as much as any independent or republican leaning votes that would otherwise have gone to Trump.
