Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Like other states, California won’t financially penalize violators, but it will post the names of violators on the state Department of Justice’s website.

Wow that’s a brutal punishment wtf

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 40 points 1 month ago

“How dare you sir” ahh punishment.

Frat bros will just look at that list to find out where they can bumblebuck the easiest while on their 4-8 year sex pest quest.

California really is the asshole of America (or is that Texas? i dont fucking know anymore).

[–] BashfulBob@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's Texas. California loves to Pantomime at decency then cower whenever someone calls to Woke.

Texas reveals in fascism and torments people for trying to be nice

Agreed.

California's statewide vibes are mask-on liberalism with techbro characteristics but Texas has a stench of chuddery to it that's been persistent every time I've been anywhere there.

Don't get me started about Fort Worth. Brief image to share: imagine a parade of meemaw smoothskin with 4-8 Burgerland flags on each of their mobility scooters all in a parade formation and rolling around public walking space (what little there was in Stroadland) deliberately trying to ram into or at least drive off people walking while beeping their little horns and yelling "COMING THROUGH" for some Trump-knows-what reason. joker-amerikkklap

My neighborhood in Houston is full of legitimately good chill people who would fit into a bodega in Brooklyn as easily as a tackle shop in Kentucky. Its frustrating because I grew up in a neighborhood where people were legit just a bunch of selfish reckless assholes and this ain't it. They're not invested in the culture war crap, they don't want a War with China or to crucify trans kids or whatever. But the power-mad fascists running the state government are just kinda railroading through insane bullshit because they can. Its enervating to just watch it all wash over us like a tidal wave of shit.

I haven't been to Houston, I admit.

Those were still a thing?

I thought rich parents just made a sizable donation to get their kids in.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago (3 children)

they are totally still a thing at so-called competitive admission schools. I met somebody once who dropped they were a "double legacy" at Vassar as an unironic brag and I immediately made it their nickname and took every opportunity to bring it up, because that should not be a thing.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Imagine being proud of that.

And I thought my degree was Mickey Mouse (well according to employers it is) because I went to a state school and did not major in STEM.

Legacy admissions seems like a great way to maintain social hierarchy and keep the rich donors friendly without having an explicit paper trail. Also, I don't think doctors and lawyers have "make 6 to 7 figure bribe" money lying around, and I think their kids are the main target demo of legacy admissions

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

I imagined like $10k or something along those lines. It doesn't take much to bribe.

Senators sell out humanity for way less than I expected, for sure.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago

hey remember that massive admissions scandal from a few years ago that showed rampant abuse of wealth to falsify and finesse applications as well as outright bribery of administrators

Rare California W, but Newsom is still a coward.

[–] RION@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

[–] curmudgeonthefrog@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Is it really a ban if there's no meaningful penalty for ignoring the ban? thonk-cri
