He's ok. I'm very familiar with Asian cooking, so I get the jokes very well. It gets repetitive after a while though.

It's fun seeing Jamie Oliver get regularly put in his place.

"Jamie Oliveoil...haiyaaaa"

For years my dad has unknowingly been doing an Uncle Roger impression every time he orders Chinese food.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Makes me feel racist as fuck because that stereotyped Chinese accent is just super funny to me.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I think that's the whole point.

He's funny in small doses, but the traditionalist gatekeeping thing gets old.

I always thought that was part of the character he plays and that he's basically joking. Some of his complaints are ridiculous, like once he said not to use a dough splitter to scoop chopped veggies. He can't be serious about that stuff.

[–] Dran_Arcana@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

It 100% is part of the character; so is the accent if you didn't know. He speaks a perfect Midwestern accent when not in character

It's been a while since I've watched him. You're probably right. I hope so, that makes it funnier.

[–] Surp@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

He's ok and annoying at the same time. Can only take very little of him.

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

Hes pretty funny. I don't think I can do a marathon of him, though. Its the same skit every time. But I do enjoy watching him from time to time. Especially if hes shitting on Jamie Oliver. Wish he'd shit on Bobby Flay. That guys a hack.

From what I've seen he only gets up tight about food not being prepared traditionally. And like, I don't care. As long as I like the taste, I don't care whether or not it's accurate.

Half my favorite foods are versions that would probably be considered war crimes in their country of origin - at least by snobs.

Smack the like button like your parents smacked you.

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

As half Asian, I think his accent is pretty over the top but I am at least glad to see a strong Asian identity, and to an extent embracing our stereotypes. I'm also glad others can enjoy this content, even though it isn't the same without having experienced Asian parents.

My wife loves him, I bought her the wok Gordon Ramsey gave Uncle Roger.

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Now your wife can be wok fukboi too. Fuiyoh!

He's just your typical Chinese Indo-Malay uncle.
