Lefty Memes

4230 readers
2112 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, and discussion go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, upvoting good contributions and downvoting those of low-quality!

Rules

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme)

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such,

as well as condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)

6. Don't idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

7. Absolutely no posts or comments meant to relativize(/apologize for), advocate, promote or defend:

(This is not a definitive list, the spirit of the other rules still counts! Eventual duplicates with other rules are for emphasis.)

If both sides are the same, can we at least veer a little bit away from fascism? Hint: both sides are not the same. Your vote for democracy does matter.

The communists are really trying to get lefties to not vote, giving the election to Trump.

Supposedly all to make a statement about Gaza's importance, something a lot of Americans actually don't agree with simply because Gazans are not very easy to sympathize with. And that's not only because of racism.

Realistically of course we know that a majority of them really just want the US to decend into a messy revolution as soon as possible, so Xi and Putin can conquer their targets with weak or no US opposition.

Of course there could be a revolution if they had the numbers but it'll more likely be flashes of civil war, something the right is genuinely more serious about trying to win. There would be a breakdown of logistics, fracturing of territory, and terrible suffering and massive amounts of death – mostly not from combat.

Maybe some extra delusional communists here hope to find a nice spot in the oppressive one party system they envision for the US, of course a massive long shot which would never gain broad control over the country even if one was established. Most Americans wouldn't tolerate it and rather defer to state governance.

Hey I feel and agree with you about a lot here but wtf

How is this any way to talk about... anyone? I don't need them to be easy to sympathize with, they are automatically entitled to it. Cuz they're dying. Lets be real clear. Our governments involvement with Israel is fucking awful and Americans have blood on our hands. We can agree or disagree about our own politics but don't let animosity get the better of you. We are brutalizing innocent people. You and I owe them dignity even if our lifestyles aren't compatible with theirs or whatever.

Everyone knows Gazans were dead set on thrashing and killing until one of the sides was dead and gone. The vast majority of Gazans do not want peace.

Everyone except Gazans knew which side would be dead if it went too far.

The only reason the people of Gaza aren't doing this to Israel is because they literally just aren't capable. When Gazans rushed out for their killing spree, it showed very clearly where their priorities lie. Killing the enemy for no other gain was more important than absolutely every other consideration.

Look, I have almost no sympathy for the people of Gaza. The little I have is in the form of thoughts that It would be best to get kids and mothers a safe escape route out to Egypt or somewhere else. I do recognize that Israel is still going too far and should lose support, they have really decided to become something we can't possibly consider an ally and still tell ourselves we want to be an ethical alliance. But I really just don't care that Gaza was the target of their brutality. Despite the power imbalance it still feels about as awful as bombardments of Berlin. I'd be curious what you think of the German lives lost. I personally don't care. It's a mild tragedy in comparison to what the Germans largely wanted and tolerated from their leadership.

At least the Republican backed genocide will also be making life living hell for LGBTQI people, women, and migrants in the US as well.

[–] YourNetworkIsHaunted@awful.systems 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn, I can't wait to hear about all the things you're doing to try and actually end the abominable genocide against the people of Palestine. Meanwhile the rest of us are looking for ways to do that and also voting against the guy who promised to double-down and bring the violence home against immigrants.

Pretending Trump's presidency wouldn't be objectively worse for all the causes leftists care about, even the ones (like Palestine) Harris isn't going to do shit about isn't taking a principled stand. It's hiding from what little power you have in the electoral system in order to keep whatever happens next off your conscience. And frankly, the Palestinians don't care about your conscience any more than the Hispanic Americans or trans kids.

What have you looked at so far?

People come to a meme community and expect a deep, well-reasoned essay on the state of things and the best ways forward from one captioned image :-\ Is there not a dichotomy between nuance and memes?

The comments around here are just wild flailings based mostly on assumptions. There's nothing to argue with. It's a picture with some text on it, popularized as the simplest form of humour. Looking at the comments around here now feels like watching a bunch of people arguing with a dog. There's really not so much being said.

This is kinda baffling, is what I'm getting at. It looks like almost nothing's been said so people are furiously attacking things that haven't. 🤷

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

For real. It happens constantly. There's a lot of sealions out there who take the existence of a meme as an invite to a debate.

[–] pyrflie@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

It's a political community mate. We take it in the worst context.

This is Lord of the Flies. I know it, you know it, we expect to be hung here.

So powerful. Can you imagine how many lives this representation will save?
