Definitely can't hurt. This is one of those things therapy is good for (versus stuff that's the consequence of capitalism).

Also, depending on your disposition, adopting a new companion animal can ease the pain. It obviously can never replace the void of your lost animal, but it allows you to forget and keep youe mind off it.

Thanks but I think it's going to be a while until I adopt a new cat. rn I just want to process this and work through the trauma.

If the therapist that helped you after your mom's passing was good ask if she has any experience with helping people with animal loss. Might be good to go to someone you already know.

I'll search around tomorrow to see if she ever set up a practice around here. It was in rehab I saw her, I got special grief counseling because my mom had just died.

To follow on to this, I just asked my partner who is a therapist and they had the same advice. They pointed out that a therapist often knows the resources in your area that will be able to help. For example, in my area, my partner was able to recommend several resources and therapy groups over animal companion loss. If your former therapist isn't able to help, they should be able to point you to resources that can help you.

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. I mainly lurk around these parts but your post brought me to tears. meow-hug

i wasn't aware that this was a thing; is it like talk therapy?

Not sure that's why I'm asking.
