Reminds me of a story, but I don't know if this actually happened:

An architect was asked to plan a new university campus. He presented his plans with all the different buildings, but people were astonished: "You have not planned any paths in your layout!". Architect: "We'll just sow grass everywhere. A year later, we will know where to put the paths."

It’s interesting how the ground on the downhill side of the wall seems to have built up to meet the top side. I don’t know if it’s just from storm water washing the exposed dirt down or coming off people’s shoes, maybe both, but it makes me think this has existed for a long time!

Maybe also when people walk up the dirt gets loosened and falls down the path, piling up at the bottom

Is this Leuven? The Delhaize + apartment buildings in the background ring a bell.

Don't think it is, I tried to geoguess it but the only "real" Delhaize near Leuven with those red bricks is in Heverlee but the surroundings don't match.

But honestly those apartment buildings could be in literally any city from Arlon to Oostende.
