A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

I regularly forget what year it is though...

Bro that was 10 years ago.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

Nice try, I know it was 20 years ago.

Kids born February 29, 2000, turned 6 years old this year.

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Ahkshually, they've only had 6 birthdays. They're still 24 years old.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 28 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They can if you hit them in the head hard enough.

Works for someone born in 1980 like myself. Easy to track when born at the beginning of a decade.

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world -1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, equally as easy to split the equation. Born in 1999? Subtract current year from 1990. Then subtract 9. Easy.

[–] essell@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

And the easiest way to count sheep is to count all the legs and divide by 4, right?

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If you don't see a difference between "do the tens, then do a simple subtraction with digits between 1 - 9" and dividing an arbitrary number by four, then there is no sense arguing. Also it would lead to bad results in your example - the average number of legs a sheep has isn't 4.

[–] TwentySeven@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

For most herds of sheep, the average is four.

Especially if they were born January 1st.

December 31st throws the whole thing off though.

Did you fill in your TPS reports?

[–] Atemu@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I have no idea what that is.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Uuuuuh, yeeeeeeeeeeah. We’re gonna need you to come in on Saturday.

I'm sure an unfortunate bang on the head could invalidate that one

Edit: that reads a lot more like a threat than I intended it

Unless they develop Alzheimer's or something else that fucks with their memory. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 1 points 4 days ago

Don't think that's a big problem among 24 year olds

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know about that. I regularly forget what year it is.

Then again, I'm pushing 40.

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

If they were born later in the year than it currently is, they'll have to -1

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, 2021 has to be the easiest year for club bouncers

[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

If you live in a country with a weirdly high drinking age.

[–] jaxiiruff@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Its gonna be really helpful later in my life thats for sure, for now not really.

[–] scottmeme@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

As a 2000, it makes it stupid easy

[–] BlueLineBae@midwest.social 5 points 3 weeks ago

I'm a 1990 and I thought I had it good.

Who's got it easier? The people born in 2000 or 2001?

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee -1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Er, uh, ok?

Like do people forget how old they are just because of the year they were born?

If someone does forget their age, they just have to do a little math, no different than someone born in 2000.

[–] Joey@programming.dev 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think the point is just that the little bit of math is very easy if you're born in 2000.

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Totally!

Thread OP, kinda like it's easier to do the math when trying to remember your age or the year something happened in reference to one another.

"I remember I was 12 when I got braces", so they know the year was 2012 when they got braces...

...which is easier than having to calculate:

  • I was born in 1993
  • so, 2000 - 1993 = 7
  • and, 12 - 7 = 5
  • 2000 + 5 = 2005 is when they got braces.
