Please update your post so that the entire shower thought is in the title. Rule 2.

[–] vatlark@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the feedback. I would argue that determining what post counts as a shower thought (rule 1) is a lot harder than determining what posts are about politics.

This pretty quickly became a well liked post with lots of interaction and is remaining mostly civil.

It's hard to argue that this post doesn't break the new rule for "avoid politics".

Should this post stay?

How do people here feel about the "avoid politics" rule? Should it be rewritten in some way to allow this post?

This was reported for being nonsense. There are rules against spamming, trolling, and other "attention stealing behavior". Spamming would be the closest, but it's not repetitive so I'll leave it for now.

I'm not sure that it's possible to move posts but that would be funny. Maybe c/powerthoughts

In the sidebar you will see that rule 3 is "Avoid politics", as of US election day.

Political posts represent the vast majority of the moderation burden. They tend not to be the fun/quirky/whimsical/goofy/nonsense kind of posts that people enjoy from c/showerthoughts.

Maybe we should make a c/drivewaythoughts or a c/doomscrollingthoughts to fill the void.

The rule will begin 0200 UTC Nov 6, 2024 to be exact, you have 2 minutes, go ham.

As always I'm open to feedback.

EDIT: While I'm editing the sidebar. I will remove the "Be good to others" rule because it's redundant to the opening paragraph of Lemmy's Code of Conduct.

EDIT 2: If you want to give anonymous feedback you can report this post and give your feedback in the report. It's anonymous to me at least.

EDIT 3: Here are some good counter points to the new rule:

  1. This arguably offers new perspective on an ordinary topic but it's pretty political: https://lemmy.world/post/21997198
  2. This post was very popular and remained civil: https://lemmy.world/post/21925102

We can't keep everyone happy. I'll agree that this post gave me pause. I think it's better to error on the side of leaving things up.

Please report the post if you think it violates rules, and please specify which rules and why.

I'm sure Netanyahu also wants it to end right after he gets his sadistic goals.

As of mid 2024 the lowest estimate I found was >7000 Palestinian children dead, as compared to a highest estimate of <100 Israeli children dead. Any child dead is too many but it shows that this is not a war, it's a slaughter.

I voted for Harris because any alternative is asinine, but we should expect that the arms shipments to Israel will continue unless we pressure our politicians.

This was reported for breaking rule 1,4,5.

1 The votes seem to agree that it's not a shower thought. I'm slow to remove a post for this rule, I would rather let the votes do the work.

4 I'm not sure saying this about Putin is saying anything about any people group. You can be hugely supportive of people groups while thinking their leaders are responsible for, or capable of, horrible things. At various times nearly every country could be used as an example of this.

5 I'm not sure what community rule it's breaking. It's not a very positive post but people should be free to be negative online if they that's how they feel. Lord knows that many comment threads are negative. I may feel differently if the the majority of posts suddenly became negative.

As always I'm open to feedback.

That's interesting, thank you. I didn't know anything about Gujarati, this is a cool opportunity to learn!

Edit: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gujarati_numerals

The world has a lot of different standards for a lot of things, but I have never heard of a place with the default screw thread direction being opposite.

So does each language have a fun mnemonic?

When proton first added docs you could only edit them through a browser. I just noticed today that they added it to the android app!

When I first tried OsmAnd a few years ago it was overwhelming, there is so much to customize.

I tried it again recently and it really impresses me.

My OsmAnd ski profile shows me slope for avalanche risk and 3D relief so I don't need Fatmap, plus OsmAnd let's you download 7days of weather.

OsmAnd doing routing on hiking trails replaces my need for Gaia.

Really impressive work by the OsmAnd team.

It's a key feature of Google maps that I don't have a great replacement for. I assume moderating the reviews would be a significant challenge for the project.

The French may not have the first democracy, may not have the best democracy, but they have had to fight harder than most for their democracy.

I first learned of Street-Complete here and I really like it.

It's satisfying to walk around, complete little tasks, and get prizes, scratching a similar itch to Pokemon Go.

Stuck waiting for someone? Add opening hours for a few local businesses.

Have a long walk ahead of you? See if you can add/check house addresses as fast as you can walk.

Want to walk off a few beers before heading home? Complete some tasks in the bar street.

Its a very constructive way to "be right" on the internet.

Is one a sub group of the other? Does either term include toddlers?

I'm having this discussion with someone and we both thought the opposite from eachother and we were quite sure our way of thinking was the common understanding.

I want to know if the car I'm renting comes with liability insurance. I just want to be sure that if I am at fault in an accident, that the other car will be covered. Lets try to ignore any personal car insurance policy and let's ignore collision insurance for now.

I am under the impression that in many countries they are required to give you liability insurance when you rent the car, but I don't have a good source. Many articles have mixed information.

For the US, this article says:

For a registered car rental company in the US, they must provide a minimum level of liability protection for cars they rent out.

But this other article says

In the U.S., every state requires a minimum amount of liability insurance on car insurance policies, so you may already have liability coverage through your personal auto insurance.

Which sounds like in the US your personal insurance is all you have.
