Summary

Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the U.S.’s “51st state,” claiming it would benefit Canadians through lower taxes and military protection.

The remark follows tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, which shocked Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who likened it to betrayal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the annexation talk as unserious but unveiled a $1 billion border security plan to address U.S. concerns.

The escalating rhetoric, including insults from Trump ally Elon Musk, highlights strained Canada-U.S. relations ahead of Trump’s second term.

Dumbest fucking president for the dumbest fucking country. JFC I hate this timeline.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 12 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Canadians, it's not a joke. This fucker is god damn stupid, insane, and has a ton of money and power, beware.

[–] rbesfe@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

We have no choice but to treat it as a joke, it's not like we can do anything if he's serious

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 2 points 45 minutes ago

You're vastly underestimating how much the rest of the world likes us far more than them.

America would be immediately gang raped economically by literally every nation on earth if they tried to Ukraine us.

Plus a number of them would be happy to deploy troops as well.

Canada needs the Bomb.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

I say Donald Trump repeating William Henry Harrison's arc in its entirety is "a great idea."

I don't care if its a joke. Jokes about countries not being real, being artificial, questioning sovereignty. all of that became completely unfunny after Feb 24 2022

the dichotimy of the US and Canada, is eerily similar to that of Russia and Ukraine.

Neighbors, Cultural ties, History of imperialism attempted or otherwise, Tinpot expansionist ambitions for no better reason than Russkiy Mir / Manifest Destiny / DURR LINES ON MAPS BIGGER.

I remember when Trump joked about running for president. He also joked about sexually assaulting women. Then he joked about supporting white supremacists, undermining democracy, etc. Every Trump joke is a probe to see if his supporters will back him.

I can't wait for a future where Trump doesn't exist. How much longer do we have to tolerate this shit?

[–] GoodEye8@lemm.ee 2 points 3 hours ago

I can't wait for a future where the US has fixed its problems. Trump is just a symptom of a deeper issue within the US and when Trump is gone someone else will take his place and it'll probably get worse.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 19 points 5 hours ago

Listening to Trump is sooo incredibly exhausting. I can't do things for another four years+. My body just can't handle it.

I would like illinois to become the 11th province.

[–] rbesfe@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)
[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 2 hours ago

oh come on. we are open to it. so open.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I consent to you absorbing us.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

No, too much border gore. Maybe New England?

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

but illinois can be canadas wang like florida for the us now.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 57 minutes ago

We already have a Dildo, Newfoundland, so it would be slightly redundant.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 52 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Ignore what he says. This is all distraction and engagement/attention capital. Only what he does matters. Come on people, this isn't our first Trump presidency. We know how he operates.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I would argue that the world has been a very different place in 2024/2025 than it was the last time around, if for no other reason than we are effectivley 2 or 3 years into an already started Third World War.

(people just dont want to admit it yet because there aren't nukes flying or major advesaries directley engaged with each other yet... and thats what they associate WW3 with. but make no mistake, we're there. It's started, for a while now. We're basically in the Spanish Civil War / Japanese Invasion of China stages. )

My point here is not to fearmonger but just to say, the world is multitudes more dangerous and inflamed than it ever was at any point between the first trump administration. its a dangerous, **dangerous **fucking time to have a senile geriatric manchild-troll in the whitehouse.

[–] SeriousMite@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Right. He dominates every news cycle saying like five unhinged things every day and people tune out after a while, and then they ignore what’s happening when he actually does something unhinged.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 28 points 8 hours ago (10 children)

Been awhile since the Canadians burnt down the white house. USA might need another spanking to remind them about how this went last time.

Canadian cucks cheering for the idea of "Joining as a state/states" don't realize Canada's future would essentially be that of Puerto Rico for decades, Second class citizens, if we could even call them that, full rights and protections wouldnt apply. and thered also be a complete devastation of the land and infrastructure to boot as one nation tries to forcefully assimilate another.

Surrender your Sovereignty and have no representation to own the libs. YEA 'BERTA

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Nah, I say we don't conquer Canada so much as just become a Canadian unincorporated territory without the consent of the Canadian parliament.

We could come together and issue a grand historic Declaration of Dependence.

I don't think he realises how opposed Canadians are to this idea. Trudeau has been keeping quiet about this because they don't want to feed the troll. Meanwhile this orange moron thinks this means we're on board with this idea.

Canada might not be as wealthy as the US and might be in a housing crisis, but we still see the US as a dystopia for anyone who isn't the richest 5%.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

How about just Oregon and Washington? I promise, we're cool. Can we just join Canada? I'm willing to learn to like hockey if that will make a difference.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 92 points 10 hours ago (8 children)

He does not give one shit what Canadians or anyone else thinks of this "idea." It's not even a fully formed thought, it's just something he said while he was confused, and he covered by acting like he was making a suggestion. The guy has dementia, and he's surrounded by sycophants.

I don't think you've ever been west (or south for that matter, the USA is only a dystopia on TV) of Ontario, nobody much gives a shit either way. Eastern Bastards or Yankee bastards, same difference.
