I have a close friend that I've known 20 years who became obsessed with right-wing politics. even though I'm liberal, I don't make it my entire personality and life. But anyway... I was talking to him this morning casually like friends do.

Me: "Hey man. Do you have off today for MLK day?" Friend: "No, I have to work today." Me: "Damn, sorry to hear. I have off today since it's a company holiday." Friend: "Yeah, I work for a living. Guess that's the difference me and people who live in an ivory tower." Me: "Uhh I work for a living too. Idk why you're acting like I don't?" Friend: "I didn't mean you specifically. But you’re off and I’m not so it shows that you get to relax at least. You should be able to handle the truth lol. There's no shame in admitting that I'm a harder worker than everyone else. you shouldn't be so sensitive"

Honestly, he's not unique, either. I've met so many people who are conservative, obsessed with right-wing stuff, and they're all like this. They act like they're special and the whole world is lazy, "no one wants to work anymore" attitude.

Religious conservatives are trained from childhood to unwaveringly believe things that can't be proven, and teaches that malice is the only acceptable way to get dopamine.

Sounds like he's jealous that you are getting a day off and is trying to spin it as you being lazy

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago

Yeah OP, it just sounds like an unhealthy coping mechanism. He might just need some empathy

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Having a work ethic is one thing. But it isn’t inherently satisfying to the ego unless you feel yours is better than others’, and lord it over them. Some people just can’t maintain their motivation without this.

This guy could learn a lot from women. The world is full of women who bust their ASS and never complain or brag or get a single second of recognition.

Very moist. Very toxic. Like a 20 year old mattress, saturated in bacon grease and peppered with dip-spit.

My brother, a right winger, brought his kids up to visit me last summer.

It was at the end of the week that he told me that I hardly work at all. I'm like: Yeah, I have fucking guests in my house. I was still at my desk when I wasn't trying to keep 2 teenaged girls entertained.

He moved his family 1000 miles away and 20 years later is lamenting that they have no relationship with the people he moved away from. (I'm sure it's just a coincidence that this lines up with the rise of "Family" talk from right wingers.) This same guy calls other people "Sheeple".

Sounds like him living 1,000 miles away is a good outcome.

Why is an adutl man concerned about how much another person works...

Also working hard is not a virtue, it is an indicator of poor management

[–] elephantium@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

working hard is not a virtue

I have to disagree here. Well, probably. I figure, if you're not lazy/half-assing your job, you're pretty much working hard, right? I see it as being diligent about your job, and yes, I do see some virtue in that.

But you also wrote "indicator of poor management" which makes me think you're using "working hard" as a label for something like "unpaid overtime". That would be a whole different ballgame.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think we are align.

I practice my trade. I do everything to standard, I solve my customer's problem and I own my mistakes. That's professionalism imho

When people use "work hard" language, all I hear are grifters who in fact don't work hard or otherwise. They are seeking attention and or trying to out capitalist PR a person who is doing fine work.

The assertion that your friend is a harder worker might not ge true. I have had to work many holidays in retail because my job said I had to not because Im a harder worker.

[–] stinerman@midwest.social 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Being a harder worker isn't something to be proud of, friend.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

That depends on context but if you don't own your company ypu shouldn't be giving your job your all.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 day ago

Yeah, conservatives like to randomly plug phrases of propaganda like unfunny inside jokes. Depending on my relationship with them I do one of the following.

  1. Ignore if I'm not that close. Maybe roll my eyes a bit.
  2. Push back on it if we're in the context of world events/news/politics.
  3. If we're close enough, re-direct the culture war bullshit interjections with interjections of class war. If your friend sees it fit to just randomly call society lazy, you can also randomly call the upper capitalist class lazy government-teat sucking hoarders.

It’s just easier to hate.

People choose easy over ‘better’ as a rule.

…and, it’s just easier to hate and be angry than to work through the prejudices, and inner demons you may carry with you.

Inner work is much, MUCH harder to do. I have done some serious physical labour in my life, so I know what I’m comparing here (including the day in/day out of that life).

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

I don't understand how someone can go their whole life, never taking a look inside.

"if your position is that you CHOSE a job that makes you work on MLK Day, that makes you a dumber worker".

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Guy's a dumbass because he's taking it on the chin from his boss, acting like it's fine, and then attacking everybody except the assholes. What a little bitch.

[–] RubberElectrons@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

I can't find it, but there was a great meme of a tombstone that said, "worked really really hard". I'd also add that I acknowledge"blue collar" work being tough and important too. That's it.

Let him realize that everyone's doing their best.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago

you didn't ask him if he thinks for one fucking second that any of the shitheel CEO/executive suite trump fluffers he's generating revenue for are working today?

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 22 points 1 day ago

They've been built up to get angry about specific topics in a way that bypasses critical thought.

Did he work on xmass and thanksgiving and 4th of july and memorial day and labor day or was in an ivory tower on those days and not a hard worker. does he take any days off. I mean if hes not working and other people are at any time then they are the hard workers. Im ok with not being a hard worker though. Im more of a work smarter type person but his type is good to.

There is a reason, it's a psychological phenomenon called narcissism.
