Trump has arrived in office with the force of an avalanche; ~~ending~~ slowing a genocide on the one hand, while simultaneously promising a total nightmare for minorities and the poor throughout and outside the United States on the other hand. [edited for clarity; I do not actually think Trump has ended the Palestinian genocide obviously, I was making a joke - but the ceasefire is a genuine improvement in conditions for millions of people right now who are on the edge of death, so it cannot be dismissed]

It's still far too early to truly compare and contrast his imperial strategy with Biden's, but initial signs show that there does appear to be somewhat of a reorientation. Biden was famous for being two-faced; ostensibly offering aid and stability, while also blowing up your pipeline to ensure you did not actually have an alternative to his idea. Trump, meanwhile, seems only really capable of aggression, threatening several "allied" nations with what may as well be sanctions because of the economic harm they'd do. I suspect we'll be debating for a long time how much of this can be attributed to the specific characteristics of Trump, or whether he merely embodies the zeitgeist of imperial decline - a wounded empire lashing out with extreme violence to try and convince everybody, including themselves, that they can still be the world imperialist hegemon.

I'll admit it: I did not believe that Trump would actually try and go ahead with putting tariffs on basically anybody who annoys him. And while the threat could still be empty in regards to countries like China and Canada, Colombia is the first indication of the potential of his strategy. Despite some fiery words from President Petro, after Trump's administration revealed the punishment if Colombia did not agree, it appears that Colombia will in fact be accepting deported migrants after all. It's funny how that works.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. in seething news, here's some big talk from a vassal. incredible how freeland can spend 10 years being a US attack dog and then turn around and propose to work together with other vassals against the lord.

Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said if she’s chosen as leader of the governing Liberal Party, she would hold a summit — bringing together leaders from Mexico, Denmark, Panama and the European Union — the day she’s sworn in as prime minister.

The coalition would “coordinate a joint response to challenges to our sovereignty and our economies,” she said in a statement.

Canada announces retaliatory tariffs against the USA. Initial tariffs will be 25% of $30 billion as of Tuesday, followed by 25% of $125 billion in three weeks

Part of me thinks these tariffs from the US will remain until the next election and the Cons are elected. Trump will then drop the tariffs and the Cons can take it as a victory and claim they saved Canada

Will there be enough government bureaucracy left to implement Trump's tariffs?

[–] newmou@hexbear.net 66 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Is there a version of our immediate future where these tariffs are actually imposed tomorrow (today now I guess) and prices of the majority of goods do not really increase all that much for most Americans? And if that happens, Trump’s political mandate actually grows and he gets more belligerent?

I just see this idea of a “25% tariff resulting in a 25% price hike” as one of those things that makes sense economically when you put it on paper, that domestic companies importing products who will be paying these tariffs at customs will increase the cost they sell them for to recuperate the tariff, resulting in that cost being passed to the consumer. But I just cannot shake that it also feels like one of those nothing-ever-happens hype situations where we are all looking at a US car racing towards a wall, predicting the US car will crash, and by the grace of the US-backed Anti-God, the car goes straight through the wall unscathed

Update on the deportation flights situation: The fourth deportation flight using a US military aircraft took place today, and to a different country than before. Flight RCH141, a C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft, left from El Paso, Texas; and landed in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The flight notably avoided Mexican airspace. Ecuador has become the lastest country to allow for the United States to conduct deportation flights using US military aircraft, and has given in to the US demands on this issue without any resistance.

So for a general overview of the situation, I'll break it down into four categories:

Countries that have allowed the United States to conduct deportation flights to them directly using US military aircraft without any resistance:

  • Guatemala
  • Ecuador

Countries that allow the United States to use their airspace to conduct deportations using US military aircraft to other countries, but have not accepted US military deportation flights themselves:

  • Costa Rica
  • Nicaragua
  • Honduras
  • Belize (on a return flight from Guatemala towards the United States)

Countries that put up resistance to deportation flights using US military aircraft, but appear to have given in to US demands on this issue according to the latest White House statement, though this remains to be seen:

  • Colombia

Countries that do not allow the United States to use their airspace for US military aircraft deportation flights and have not accepted US military aircraft deportation flights themselves, but do allow the United States to use their airspace for civilian aircraft deportation flights to other countries:

  • México.

NBC Jan 27: ICE makes close to 1,200 arrests in one day https://archive.is/UPHrs

This seems to be the highest so far for Trump. If you are wondering how to know an exact count of ICE arrests per day, you don't have to look any further than the terror of ICEs twitter: https://xcancel.com/ICEgov

This is the day mentioned in the article:

"Detainers lodged" seems to refer to people who were arrested for other things, but ICE believes to be undocumented.

Unclear how many of these turn into deportations rn. I assume a lot. Trump is moving fast, and ICE is bragging on twitter. Not good.

Americans are smuggling eggs from Mexico due to a shortage of the product in the country. The US is facing an egg supply crisis due to the rise in H5N1 bird flu infections, which has led to the slaughter of more than 50 million laying hens.

The lack of eggs in the country has inflated the price of a dozen eggs, which has risen by more than 60%. With regard to smuggling, there has been a 108% increase in seizures on the country's southern border. Fines for smuggling are reaching 10 thousand dollars. A dozen eggs in Mexico cost less than half as much as in the US. While in the US a dozen eggs costs almost US$8.00, in Mexico the same product costs US$3.00.

Nevermind it's official per NYT

The Canadian government has been notified by the United States government that goods exported to the U.S. will be subject to a 25 percent tariff, with the exception of Canadian oil, which will be hit with a 10 percent tariff. Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, is planning to respond this evening.

Portuguese parliament voted against recognizing the palestinian state today. Whole right wing voted against and whole left voted in favor, the only real new thing about this is that the socialist party voted in favor of recognizing palestine for the first time, since when they were actually in power they always voted against the motions to recognize palestine introduced by the communists.

So it's going to be pretty disgusting when they're back in power and this comes up again and they don't vote in favor.

We're also in the season when people are guessing who will run for president, it seems like a guy from the navy who was in charge of the covid vacine rollout a few years ago is scheduled to announce his run and probably win on a neither left nor right platform, marking a sad sad return of the military to civilian politics after bringing us a leftist revolution in the 70s

The US Secretary of the Interior, Kristi Noem, has announced that the agency has revoked the extension of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans who have fled Nicolas Maduro's regime. As a result, Venezuelans can be deported.

If it is not possible to apply for another visa, Venezuelans, now without protection status, could be deported, according to Donald Trump's new migration policy. The TPS had been renewed on January 17 by Joe Biden, but now that it has been revoked, it will not be extended.

Imperialist enforcer's feelings hurt after being subject of imperial coercion

The Speaker of the Denmark's rubber-stamp parliament, Søren Gade, felt a "wrench in the gut" when he heard Donald Trump's threats about wanting to take over Greenland.

He said this to Politiken.

Gade, who is a former head of the Liberal Party-controlled Ministry of Defence himself, finds it particularly unfortunate in light of Denmark's consistent support for American military violence across the globe.

"It hurts a bit when you have stood in the Pentagon and received praise for Denmark's efforts, the soldiers' efforts, and have been praised for punching above your weight, and whatever else has been said."

"The praise wasn't for me, it was for Denmark and our skilled soldiers. That's why I felt a little wrench in the gut when I heard it," he says.

When you dance with the devil, you don’t get to lead.

Repost from last thread:

Denmark Scrambles to Sweeten The Deal For Greenland With Racism Plan

Today Denmark’s Social Democrat-led right-wing regime, scrambling to keep its colonial house of cards from tumbling down, has unveiled a 12-point plan to combat racism against Greenlanders, a move widely seen as an attempt to placate growing calls for Greenlandic independence. This comes amid threats of a hostile annexation by the American Trump regime, which has repeatedly demanded to take over the island, disingenuously using anti-Greenlander racism to justify its ambitions.

Greenlanders in Denmark endure discrimination in housing, education, healthcare, and employment. They are often reduced to degrading caricatures in Danish imagination — either drunken layabouts or noble savages paddling kayaks in the icy Arctic waters. Their individuality and agency have been stripped away, replaced by a toxic cocktail of stereotypes and neglect.

For decades, Denmark’s political elite has made a blood sport of demonizing the nation’s Muslim minority and racism prevention has long been a low priority for Copenhagen, smugly dismissed as woke nonsense. But now, with Greenlandic independence demands growing louder and the American Trump regime’s predatory gaze fixed on the island, Denmark has suddenly discovered the virtues of equality. The plan includes measures like a Greenlandic nationality designation in passports, increased access to translators, initiatives against discrimination in education, and funding for cultural institutions and employment initiatives. In an unprecedented nod to equality, the initiative was announced in both Danish and Greenlandic press releases.

Greenlandic MP's initially slammed the leaked draft as inadequate, but added funding has muted their opposition and they now support the final version. The question now is whether these measures can undo generations of marginalization or if they’re merely delaying the inevitable, whether that inevitability is an independent Greenland or a brazen American land grab.

After the fight between Trump and Petro, Colombian deportees arrive in Bogotá: 'Dignified, without handcuffs'.

The Colombian government had refused to receive military flights with Colombians deported from the US, but backtracked after the Trump administration announced tariffs and sanctions. The deportees were transported by two Colombian Air Force aircraft, sent to the United States after the Colombian government banned the entry of US military planes.

The Colombian aircraft had taken off for the US cities of San Diego, California, and Houston, Texas, on Monday (27). The first flight, which arrived this morning, carried 110 citizens, according to the Colombian Foreign Ministry. “Our compatriots come from the US free, dignified, without handcuffs. We have structured a productive, associative and cheap credit plan for migrants. The migrant is not a criminal, he is a free human being,” said President Gustavo Petro, posting photos from inside the flights, after overcoming diplomatic tensions with Donald Trump's government.

@SoyViking@hexbear.net The news coming out of the US these last few days - News of mass raids, tariffs, cutbacks and funding freezes, as well as the announcement the UAW is possibly organising a national strike for 2028, has made me think about unions and worker action. Especially I've been thinking about the Nordic Model.

I've been wanting to hear some thoughts on the Nordic model, but most Danes/scandis in my life are libs or about as informed as I am, so not really great wells of insight. You, being a resident newsposter and our "man on the inside" in the reclusive monarchy "Denmark" (field of the Danes in their own tongue) leads me to believe you could give valuable insights. It might not be fitting for the newsmega, but what's your take on the Nordic Model? Is it a viable method of unions getting stuff done or is it just a pacifier that slowly traps them in a state-controlled "no fun allowed" box?

Tl;dr me recently learn of Nordic model for unions. Me want hear from smart person what smart person think of model. Me would appreciate much.

Just a little (terminally?) online news to be aware of: Innuendo Studios is "back" after essentially a 4 year hiatus (gee, wonder why). Allegedly only to do a couple videos and then bow out of their online production entirely (🤞). Preaching to us for years about fascism and then coming back after saying not a word about 14 months of televised genocide in order to lecture us that we need to do something about Trump, and watch out for him insituting a Muslim registry.

I think it's just relevant to watch out for even baby leftists falling into the trap of joining this guy's fanclub and thinking he is a leftist. Beware in your broader social media and possibly even offline interactions for this dude's fandom. His preachy style makes people go absolutely gaga. Ugh.

Elon Musk’s Team [DOGE] Now Has Access to Treasury’s Payments System

articleTreasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave representatives of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency full access to the federal payment system late on Friday, according to three people familiar with the change, handing Elon Musk and the team he is leading a powerful tool to monitor and potentially limit government spending.

The new authority follows a standoff this week with a top Treasury official who had resisted allowing Mr. Musk’s lieutenants into the department’s payment system, which sends out money on behalf of the entire federal government. The official, a career civil servant named David Lebryk, was put on leave and then suddenly retired on Friday after the dispute, according to people familiar with his exit.

The system could give the Trump administration another mechanism to attempt to unilaterally restrict disbursement of money approved for specific purposes by Congress, a push that has faced legal roadblocks.

Mr. Musk, who has been given wide latitude by President Trump to find ways to slash government spending, has recently fixated on Treasury’s payment processes, criticizing the department in a social media post on Saturday for not rejecting more payments as fraudulent or improper.

It is not clear whether the team led by Mr. Musk, the world’s wealthiest man, has blocked any payments since gaining access to the system.

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is not a government department, but a team within the administration. It was put together at Mr. Trump’s direction by Mr. Musk to fan out across federal agencies seeking ways to cut spending, reduce the size of the federal work force and bring more efficiency to the bureaucracy. Most of those working on the initiative were recruited by Mr. Musk and his aides.

Similar DOGE teams have begun demanding access to data and systems at other federal agencies, but none of those agencies control the flow of money in the way the Treasury Department does.

Mr. Bessent granted access to the payments system to a handful of staff members affiliated with DOGE, including Tom Krause, the chief executive of a Silicon Valley company, Cloud Software Group, according to one of the people familiar with the change. Access to the system has historically been closely held because it includes sensitive personal information about the millions of Americans who receive Social Security checks, tax refunds and other payments from the federal government.

A Treasury Department spokesman, a spokeswoman for DOGE and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a process typically run by civil servants, the Treasury Department carries out payments submitted by agencies across the government, disbursing more than $5 trillion in fiscal year 2023.

Former officials said the onus was on individual agencies to ensure their payments are proper, not the relatively small staff at the Treasury Department, which is responsible for making more than one billion payments per year.

Mr. Lebryk, the career Treasury official who retired on Friday, had resisted requests from members of Mr. Trump’s transition team for access to the data last month. After Mr. Trump took office, the White House indicated that he should be removed from the job and, according to a person familiar with the matter, Mr. Bessent suggested putting him on leave.

Democrats raised alarm this week that the Trump administration and Mr. Bessent, who was just confirmed by the Senate this week, were compromising the federal government’s payments system.

“To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy,” Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, wrote in a letter to Mr. Bessent on Friday. “I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems.”

Mr. Wyden followed up on Saturday to express concern that access to the payment system had already been granted and pointed to Mr. Musk’s potential conflicts of interest.

“Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk’s own companies. All of it,” he wrote on social media.

During the transition, Mr. Musk vocally opposed Mr. Bessent being picked as Mr. Trump’s Treasury secretary. Mr. Musk, then just an empowered adviser to Mr. Trump, went public with his opinion that he preferred Howard Lutnick, a Wall Street executive, for the role because Mr. Bessent was “a business-as-usual choice.” Mr. Lutnick became Mr. Trump’s choice for Commerce secretary.

Explosion in Rheinmetall weapons factory in Spain (southeastern Spain, Autonomous Community of Murcia, not to be confused with 'Murica) (archive link from a Spanish news website). Translating from Spanish:

Six workers have been harmed by the explosion, which happened in an ammo storage facility, with one of the workers being gravely wounded. Rheinmetall has a total of 7 factories in Spain. In August 2023 Rheinmetall bought the Spanish weapons firm "Expal Systems" for $1.3bn. The company, now named "Expal Munitions", is specialized in the manufacture of bombs, mortar ammunition, and mid-distance projectiles, as well as rocket propulsion systems and 155mm artillery projectiles, delivered to both other countries in the EU and to Ukraine. AFAIK, the causes of the explosions are still unknown (or at least unpublished).

Unemployment is high and salaries are low in general in southern Spain, so I find it hard to rejoice on the harm to the workers. That said: unlimited explosions in western military industrial factories.

So I "get" that Trump wants tariffs on Mexico and China for "productive" reasons (even though they'll do more harm than good), but why Canada though? Apart from a stupid ass poltical struggle between Trump and Canada and the evil Trudeauite Communists, is Canada invading the US market with cheap products or something?

Death to "israel" btw
