The Greeks aren't asking a question, they're telling Google that English is a Greek dialect

and Spain too. Apparently the English are strange sailors who speak a Greek dialect

Bri'ish people if they were good

Filthy buggers, go from port to port.

I doubt that there ist any explicit form of "to be" in Czech language. "Englishmen are sailors" is probably a false translation.

The UK will do anything to stand out, like creating their own country abbreviations instead of using the goddamn ISO.

"NTL" for "The Netherlands", really?

[–] ReveredOxygen@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

(for reference, the 3-letter ISO code is NLD)

The Danes ask a good question.

Why do they still wear powdered wigs?

[–] SleepyWheel@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

But also, why do Danish priests wear Elizabethan ruffs?

Because it gets better reception, at least a 10dB gain.

It represents a millstone.

Mathew 18:6 "but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Mat 18:6, ESVS)

TIL, thanks!

[–] Taniwha420@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

THIS is immediately thought about: the Danes are in no position to be criticising ridiculous ceremonial garb. Also, that's exactly the kind of self-assured arrogance I'd expect from a German. Also, ok, SOME Dutch are gorgeous, but the rest look like someone replaced their head with a milk crate.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Uniformity, basically. It's just part of the standard costume. Same as the robes and the frilly underthings.

[–] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

my favorite one is ireland

[–] Evilsmiley@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

We were trying to see if there's a Scottish equivalent of having a big Irish head on 'im

[–] Caitlynn@feddit.de 26 points 1 year ago

Every german country is insulting Britain, based

Note it doesn't say anywhere that these are the top searches.

[–] filcuk@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They are the top searches in my heart ❤️
I especially like the ones that are statements, instead 0f questions

yo I don't like the UK either and their general traditions and cultures but.. I respect brits. While this one in particular is not that heavy-handed, what's up with all the racism against brits lately in this (and other memes) sub?

[–] yetAnotherUser@feddit.de 31 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Br*tish isn't a race, it's a nationality.

And despising people who happen to live in another country closeby has been one of the most popular European pastimes for millenia.

[–] vankappa@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah maybe that's normal for racists

[–] yetAnotherUser@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's not racist if you hate everyone regardless of ethnicity with that nationality 😎

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Br*tish isn't a race, it's a nationality

"It's not racism, it's just sparkling xenophobia"?

[–] SuperCub@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think you know what that word means?

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Xenophobia or racism?

[–] SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I guess it's just that they've fucked most nations on Earth at some point of time. I've generally noticed that "racism" against former colonizers like the English, French and citizens of currently powerful countries like Americans is accepted.

[–] vankappa@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I agree that English colonialism was awful. But I'm pretty sure that not all English folk cared about colonisation of other, "underdeveloped" countries. I'm pretty sure most English folk were just trying to survive while their English lords and oligarchs were stealing their food

[–] teuast@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

some of my students are the kids of the significant Indian population in my area, and every so often the subject of England will come up in a lesson. those kids have some harsh words for the english. most of them have living relatives who remember the 40s famines there.

and yes, shit talking people who have societal power is generally more okay than doing the same with people who don't have societal power. "racism" against white americans is way more toothless than racism against, say, black americans.

[–] egonallanon@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As a lifelong resident of the UK you really shouldn't. We've really not covered ourselves in glory over the last decade or so.

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

Ha, brexitier points finger

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

It's not racism... Friendly countries have always been picking on each others. Like Finnish are picking on Swedish, Norwegians are picking on Swedish or Danish are picking on Swedish.

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I always explain it's like Americans when someone from New York makes a joke about someone from Kentucky, or California. Except we do it with neighbouring countries. And we don't need a laugh track. And we don't have to wait for the adverts to finish

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wouldn't that be racism against Kentuckians and Californians? /s

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Some yank would find a reason to be offended, yes

[–] HerbalGamer@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

Hungarians sure do ask a valid question.

[–] onion@feddit.de 12 points 1 year ago

Not it doesn't say anywhere that these are top searches.

[–] my_legs_still_hurt92@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm ashamed for my countrymen and women for asking such a stupid question.

[–] Afghaniscran@feddit.uk 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
