Tech billionaire Elon Musk agreed on March 2 with a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, for the U.S. to exit NATO and the U.N.

"I agree," he wrote in response to a post from a right-wing political commentator saying "it's time" for the U.S. to leave NATO and the U.N.

The news comes after several Republican lawmakers submitted a bill on the U.S. exit from the U.N., claiming that the organization does not align with the Trump administration's "America First" agenda.

The U.S. was among several countries, including Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Hungary, that voted against a U.N. resolution at the end of February condemning Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Both NATO and the U.N. were founded by the U.S. and other victors of World War II to promote diplomacy and cooperation between nations as well as to prevent another global war.

Musk, an unelected official, currently heads the so-called U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, which has cut significant amounts of government spending, including life-saving foreign aid.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized fellow NATO countries for their perceived lack of contributions to the military alliance and has called for a spending target of 5% of GDP for all members.

Kyiv sees NATO membership as a crucial safeguard against future Russian aggression, but Trump said in February that Ukraine "can forget" about joining the alliance, suggesting its bid was a trigger for the war—an argument echoed by Russian state propaganda.

Basically destroy all things that made the US a world leader.

Note how he did not say that it doesn't align with the US.

The USA have never been so weak and so alone. Seems like a good time to exit NATO

... which has cut significant amounts of government spending...

Has it, though? I mean, even its own over-inflated "receipts" are barely a microscopic percentage of a drop of the overall budget.

To once again prove how much of an utter dumbfuck both of these guys are.

The United States (along with UK) were the first two members of NATO. Making them the founders, so the United States is a founder. If Trump cared about there being an "America First", this should have been no concern of him because it was after-all part of an American idea.

The United States (along with other countries) was the original founding member that started the United Nations. If Trump cared about there again being an "America First" agenda, this also should never have been a concern since this was an American idea.

America apparently is not a priority when you consider these facts. It's more like "Trump First" than "America First".

America First was the slogan of the isolationist/anti-interventionist/pro-Hitler forces of the US in the 1930’s and the 1940’s. History never repeats itself, but it rhymes. I think many Americans are not aware that there is a substantial segment of the population that agrees with Hitler’s original thesis and just feel that he executed the war poorly. The Nazi rhetoric and holocaust denials are very deliberate and the destruction of the liberal world order that formed in the aftermath of World War II is the ultimate goal. I’ve strongly felt that the Ukraine war was the single most important issue in the 2024 election and the common goal of destroying the western led world order is what the project 2025 team, Trump, Putin, and Tucker Carlson all have in common.

Yes, please. Removing the US from NATO has the advantage that countries like Ukraine and Georgia can sooner join NATO. Since Russia is hostile to them, Trump (who is a Russian asset) would never let them join NATO. Getting the US out of NATO removes Trump's vote.

The US can no longer be expected to fulfill its obligations to NATO anyway, so removing the US doesn't decrease NATO's total defensive power. Trump has said he would refuse to help unless other NATO countries increase spending (which is happening slowly, but not yet). Trump would never deploy the military to defend against any attack by Putin. He may even deploy the military to assist Putin.

Trump has said he would refuse to help unless other NATO countries increase spending (which is happening slowly, but not yet).

the u.s. itself doesn't even spend what the fucktard wants other nato countries to spend on defence (five percent gdp). and some proposed cuts would actually put u.s. defence spending below even the current nato target of two percent gdp.

Musk is a moron, instead of the US leaving NATO, why not just move. He can just go to Mars as far as I'm concerned.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago

He never wanted Mars or any scientific endeavors, he just wanted public adoration, that's all he's ever wanted. He paid hundreds of billions just to get to a place where he can try to influence as many people as possible into liking him.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

B/c if he can make the US like Russia, he can achieve his obvious goal of becoming the world's first trillionaire w/in the next 3.5 years. At that point, he will probably just become a shadow king... I mean more-so that he already is.

FWIW, I think it's funny that the macOS dictionary doesn't recognize "trillionaire" as a legit word. Of course, it shouldn't be, but we all know it's inevitable.

It's terrifying to see these madmen ruining organizations created solely for peacekeeping and conflict aversion.

I hope this won't come to fruition. No, let me rectify... THIS CANNOT COME TO FRUITION. In contrast to what many Americans think, the distance between Russia and the U.S is 55 miles away. 55 miles between Alaska and Russia. Why would one think that Russia won't stop after they completed the checkmarks in knocks on wood Alexandr Dughin's "The Basis of Geopolitics(1997)" thesis?

Considering they broke several ceasefires and agreements/treaties/memorandums, why would one think they wouldn't have pretenses of annexing Alaska back, hence reverting the purchase by force from the U.S? (View the Alaska Purchase 1867 sale)

Let that sink in and meditate upon the requirement of an organization meant to halt The Russian Federation expansion.

[–] venotic@kbin.melroy.org 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Trump will find a way to give Russia Alaska back. If and when Trump needs more money for legal fees, he'll willingly sell Alaska for a few million.

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"We paid 7.2 millions for it, I sold it for 10 millions, tremendous profit! It's the best deal ever!

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 6 points 23 hours ago

Are you a time traveler? This is exactly what he would say.

[–] FirstCircle@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well after all, what do we need Alaska for? Does it have vast reserves of untapped hair dye, the Stuff Prez. Leon Needs? Don't think so.

Isolationism won't make America safer, just lonelier on the global stage.

Wait until the US dives deeper into the fuck around part and countries start putting sanctions on them.

Russia isn't going to be buying a pile of Musk's shitty Cyberlemons.

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Why the fuck should we care what he says?!

[–] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 29 points 23 hours ago

Because he has unchecked power in our government. It's important to pay close attention to what he says and does, so we can figure out the best ways to remove him.

I publicly support deporting this laminated-faced welfare queen.
