Scientists are still trying to figure out how this movie went woke but didn't go broke.

[-] whatsarefoogee@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Everything "woke" about this movie was conspicuously missing from the trailers or any promotional material. The marketing for this film has been incredibly well handled.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 11 months ago

But it did go broke. It is reality that is wrong.

[-] TheOakTree@beehaw.org 3 points 11 months ago

They spent $300m on production and marketing, and made $1b... I'm struggling to see the broke part.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 11 months ago

What? I don't think you've read my comment properly.

I don't really understand what you mean then, you said it did go broke, and that reality is wrong. Meaning, it didn't go broke, and you refuse to acknowledge reality for some reason.

Got back from the theatre about 10m ago, and I see why! It was a lot of fun, and while it did have some serious things, it also didn't take it's humorous parts seriously. For 2 hours and the cost of a ticket, I'd definitely recommend it.

Honestly, what I expected when I went to see Barbie was a charming yet shallow movie-length commercial. What I got instead was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

[-] ShustOne@lemmy.one 11 points 11 months ago

Yeah I couldn't believe how fun it was. The story isn't perfect but it's just a blast

any news that makes Ben Shapiro upset is good news to me

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has officially made $1 billion globally at the box office, becoming the fastest Warner Bros. release to hit the milestone.

Barbie is the first movie from a solo female director to hit the mark, joining just a few other female-directed films that have grossed over a billion dollars internationally: Frozen and Frozen II (both co-directed by Jennifer Lee alongside Chris Buck) and Captain Marvel (co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck).

“It’s a good club to be in,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution, in a statement to Variety.

Chief among them, I’d argue, is that Gerwig — who also co-wrote the film alongside regular collaborator Noah Baumbach — deserves to be given as much money as she wants to make whatever she pleases.

Prior to the release of Barbie, The New Yorker reported that the toy company is considering adapting everything from Hot Wheels to Uno.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the sublime titular protagonist, while Ryan Gosling’s job is Ken.

I'm a bot and I'm open source!

[-] Sharkwellington@lemmy.one 5 points 11 months ago

How the fuck do you adopt Uno into a movie??

[-] AFLYINTOASTER@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Make it a realistic Hunger Games esque survival card game movie. I want to see heads explode when they get hit with that 7th consecutive Draw 2 and have to draw 14 cards. I want to see Predator but it's two guys both holding three Draw 4s. I want blood to be spilled, a PG-13 rating at a minimum.

100% the next actual Barbie doll is going to be “Weird Barbie”

Just searched “Weird” on Amazon and it’s already the top suggested result. People are searching for the doll and also the Halloween costume en mass.

[-] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 13 points 11 months ago

I actually want a weird Barbie, and I'm not into Barbies. But here's the catch, weird Barbies are made, not bought. If you buy a weird Barbie, that ruins the point.

[-] Sharkwellington@lemmy.one 12 points 11 months ago

It's like buying pre-worn jeans, you were supposed to do that yourself!

My in-laws had the idea of shipping a regular Barbie doll with scissors and markers.

[-] woutet@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Mattel already announced weird Barbie as a real doll: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cvh1fLTLD-Q/

[-] Creddit@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Of course they did, haha

[-] MayaHorsewoman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 months ago

Oh god that's so stupid...

The whole point of the weird Barbie is that it's being badly treated by kids, and was once a normal Barbie... Why do they now sell what we all did to our barbies at some point as a brand new one

[-] FoxBJK@midwest.social 3 points 11 months ago

They’re selling an “I am Kenough” sweater for like $80 already, so if anything I’m surprised they didn’t have this doll ready to go!

[-] dunning_cougar@waveform.social 13 points 11 months ago

Come on Barbie, let’s go party!

[-] Anissem@lemmy.ml 12 points 11 months ago

Like Barbie or not, I’m just happy to see some original movies pop up. Hopefully it can be a reminder to studios that people don’t want just sequels and reboots.

[-] Geth@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 11 months ago

Technically still based on an existing and very recognizable IP, that's probably part of the success. The story is mostly original I guess.

[-] Malek061@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

This movie has some serious kenergy behind it.

[-] Master@lemm.ee 9 points 11 months ago

Just came back from seeing it. Loved the overall message but the movie was pretty disjointed with a lot of weird plot lines that never get closure. It wasn't that great of a movie which was sad because the set pieces were great, the acting was good and it had a wholesome positive and thought provoking message. It just wasn't a good movie. But also its been two hours and im still going over the movie mentally so maybe it is a good movie.

I just dont know how I feel about this movie.

[-] bouncing@partizle.com 8 points 11 months ago

Life in plastic. It’s fantastic.

[-] Teknikal@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

Yeah Margot Robbie is stinking hot. No surprise to me.

[-] Quereller@lemmy.one 4 points 11 months ago

Billionaire Barbie set comes when?

[-] Poob@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 months ago

Only if it comes with a guillotine

[-] Tb0n3@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago

That's, what, 200 tickets sold at least with today's prices.

[-] Badass_panda@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Just watched it, gotta say I really enjoyed it. I thought it was smart and fun -- I am not super familiar with the toys but I feel like if I were, there would have been a lot of Easter eggs.
