President Donald Trump threatened to put a 200 percent tariff on all alcoholic products coming out of the European Union, including French wine and Champagne, as he takes the transatlantic trade war up a notch.

"The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Wednesday morning.

"If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES.

"This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S."

These tariff exchanges will continue until April 2. If deals aren't reached by then, Trump will impose reciprocal tariffs on all America's trading partners, who may return fire with other countermeasures. Global markets are unsettled by the ongoing trade war and fear a recession is looming as a result.

Unless they all plan to flee to a non extradition treaty country in late 2027. Yes.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

Why would they need to flee? They are the government, and the Supreme Court has already ruled that anything the President does is legal.

Yeah.. Like when the dems put him in jail for all those felonies... lol.

The state is the source of fascism, not the solution.

Chump ran to stay out of prison. He was going to lose that case in NY. He was turbofucked. Until Kamala and her team decided to pursue republican votes instead of literally anything else.

He went for the Hail Mary play to save his own ass and incompetent corrupt liberals carried him to a touchdown. Classic DNC political game theory. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Dumbest motherfucker ever. Single handedly throwing the world into chaos. It's time for the rest of the world to ignore America and do business with each other. Let Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, and Jong Un go and have a 4 way circlejerk in Siberia while the rest of the world works together to become stronger. This man doesn't deserve the air which he's been allowed to breathe.

Great Leader Kim Jong Un more or less had a split with Trump after the failure to make a deal.

DPRK Today no longer talks about Trump being wise.

Great Leader Kim Jong Un’s beautiful sister even blamed Trump recently for stepping up military provocations.

KCNA denounced Trump's proposal to takeover Gaza stating its slaughter and robbery.

After the American election, Comrade Kim Jong Un vowed to implement the toughest anti-U.S. policy

So no, the Great Leader is not going to join this ‘circlejerk’, relationship with America is not good and will remain so until Trump fixes the relationship.

It technically can't be called champagne if it isn't made in Champagne France. Otherwise it's sparkling wine. Sheer brilliance on all accounts, here. /S

Trebuchets are just medieval siege artillery from the trebuch region of France, everything else are just sparkling catapults.

Dear capitalist media... He's not just "threatening France". He's imposing a deteriorating quality of life on USA and the planet more generally.

This sucks too, but I live near the Finger lakes in NY, so I already buy local wines. I don't think this will get the casual wine drinker upset. This is another example of him being a bully.
