Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

The Kremlin said Friday that the European Union’s refusal to lift sanctions on Russia demonstrates the bloc is not interested in an end to the war in Ukraine.

Moscow has demanded that the West remove sanctions from the state-owned Rosselkhozbank as a precondition for restoring a deal on the safe passage of Ukrainian cargo through the Black Sea

In case there still are some people thinking that Russia wants peace; here's their narrative.

Russia can have peace at any time they want.
All they have to do is pull out of Ukraine.

But to ease the sanctions, a little more is required, like returning the abducted children, and reimburse Ukraine for their losses du to their illegal completely unjustified invasion.

To lift the sanctions completely, would probably require guarantees that Russia doesn't rearm on top of the above, and EU observers to monitor that,

Refusal to withdraw troops to Russia proper show that Russia doesn't want peace.

Refusal to cancel attacks on Ukraine and democracies worldwide shows kremlin does not want peace.

I've been following how Europe would respond to the Trump-Putin BS, this week. Just now, I got curious as to what Moscow was saying about those meetings and I found this.

It's funny how they keep talking about " the West" and that Europe doesn't want peace, because we won't lift sanctions.

From Europe's POV, it's really hard to distinguish the rethoric from the East from Trump's. This article is another testimony to that lunacy, imo.

I thought the sanctions have no effect and don't matter? Which is it?

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 4 days ago

Both, but strategically spaced out in the state broadcast so it's not too obvious.

not interested in an end to the war in Ukraine.

There needs to be pushback that they're not interested in surrendering Ukraine. Don't let the assholes pretend their demands are reasonable.

Hopefully, at this point, they aren't taken seriously enough for a logical rebuttal to be necessary.

[–] SkavarSharraddas@gehirneimer.de 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's always necessary. There's too many people who only remember the thing they heard the most (or last).

Mockery or eye-rolling dismissal works with those same people, though. A complicated counterargument can actually lend credibility if it's not totally understood, because it makes an outlandish perspective seem worthy of consideration.

Victim blaming, such a classic.

Oooor you can actually prove you words and then we can talk about easing the sanctions? (or put Putin behind bars and then we can have actual peace)
