The sons of Lehi in the book of Mormon are:

  • Laman
  • Lemuel
  • Nephi
  • Sam

I think the writer just lost interest in weird names

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

The writer's siblings:
Alvin
Hyrum
Sophronia
Samuel
William
Katharine
Don Carlos?
Lucy

So less lost interest in weird names and more Gary Stu

Imagine some parents in ancient greece deciding to name their child Java Script Object Notation.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

I'm sure many objected to that

It's so weird that names mean stuff and aren't just a feel. How many cultures besides Americans have names with no meaning?

[–] StJohnMcCrae@slrpnk.net 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Basically all names have meaning if you trace the etymological roots back far enough - even American's. In most cases, those meanings are just unknown to the people passing them down.

Yo, wtf? And I quote from that wiki article:

"The first known vending machine, created in the 1st century CE by Hero of Alexandria, dispensed holy water. This invention predates the modern concept of vending machines by nearly 2,000 years, making it seem anachronistic in ancient history."

That sounds more like a faucet

Beverly, which originated from the term "beaver meadow" and has historical usage

I have questions

Like, "Beverly, are you free Saturday night?"

Extra apropos points (apropoints?) because Theophania is also Greek.

Growing up, every kid I knew named Jason was a total fucking asshole except for one. Fuck you, Jasons (except for you, Jason, you were cool).

Now in the twilight of middle age, one of my best friends is a Jason so the universe balanced it out I guess.

Hi Jason's mom

[–] MightyLordJason@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Thanks! Knighthood for you

My brother is Jason and is a bit of a nob tbh.

I do love him, and want the best for him

But he is a bit of a nob

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Sounds like an ISO standard brother to me.

[–] DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I completely agree with this anomaly, but my version is Scott. Fuck all Scotts but one, he's cool.

Confirmed. I also only know one cool Scott.

Don't sleep on "Tiffany"!

[–] almost1337@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago

I have a friend named Jason; he was supposedly named after the cartoon "Jace and the Wheeled Warriors", only his dad is a bit dense and didn't know the actual title.

I’m 40 so half the women I know are named Jessica, the other half are Ashleys

[–] PotentialProblem@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everyone I know is named Kim for some reason. Men and women. It’s confusing

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are you posting from Korea?

[–] PotentialProblem@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago

Haha no, but that’d make a lot of sense if I was

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I swear half my highschool was Melissa(s) and Stephanie(s)

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago

And the other other half are Jennifers
