That episode is pure fire, I'm not afraid to admit it

[–] JulesTheModest@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago

I'm the rare person that loves both Star Trek and musicals, so this was perfectfor me to see!

Seriously though, I had no idea this wasn't popular. On par with Once More With Feeling, imo.

It was popular. Don’t let those brigading against the mere idea of a musical distort the facts.

Some of the review sites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ended up with average scores in the 7/70% range merely because of the large number of 1/10 votes.

If you check out the vote distribution, it was a small but very vocal minority who opposed the episode on principle, who created the impression that it wasn’t well received by the fandom.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of American musicals, but I enjoyed and have certainly included it in my rewatches already.

Lol I'm literally watching Once more with feeling. Decided to watch all musical episodes I could find.

Where do we go from here?

Sorry for the delay in asking. I think I was in heaven.

[–] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I hated it with the exception of Uhura's song, even fast-forwarded through La'an's song, but the second they mentioned it reaching Klingons I was invested.

And when they hailed the Klingons it did not disappoint.

[–] FaceDeer@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

My main annoyance was how short that bit was.

And also that they teased us with the mention of sea shanties twice without ever delivering.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean... the songs were okay, but none of them were Faith of the Heart.

They really should have sang both Faith of the Heart and the lyrics to the original theme song.

"Status Report" is great, and the rest are good enough and the episode was really fun.

Glad they did it, but I'm not looking for an annual occurrence. I can love it and also say 1 is enough. Same with the Lower Decks crossover

[–] NocturnalEngineer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Everytime I listen to "Status Report", I start grinning like a cheshire cat.

[–] stevehobbes@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I think both those things are too extreme. Maybe not every season, especially with short seasons now, but certainly they’ve earned more than one based on execution for both.

The crossover episode was great and the musical was superb, I thought. I don’t want that every episode, but I could handle once a season, but one every other is probably better.

I love both Star Trek and musicals, and when "Subspace Rhapsody" was announced, I wasn't thrilled and thought it would be bad Star Trek and a bad musical. I was so wrong! I loved it so much!

The best song is "How Would That Feel," La'an is the best, and I will fight anyone who says I'm wrong!

[–] porthos@startrek.website 10 points 1 year ago

I don’t watch much other tv than Star Trek, so I don’t really care if it’s a meme to do this on a tv show but I loved it. I usually hate musicals because the songs feel like they hit pause on the story but this episode was hilarious while also being meaningful.

[–] snake_case@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I just feel they should have done a better song with the Klingons

[–] PM_me_your_vagina_thanks@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Yeah, distinct lack of Klingon opera!

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

The rug pull of using K(ling)-pop was funny as hell though.

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They tried it but it wasn’t dishonourable.

Apparently, the alternate version will be a bonus on the DVD/BlueRay set.

Ooh, interesting.

That would not have been a grave dishonor. The K-Pop is probably ritual suicide territory.

[–] stephfinitely@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Completely fair

[–] Lydia_K@startrek.website 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I ADORED this episode! "Status Report" is such an incredible song, I can't get over it.

Sorry, yes. Time for a rewatch! 🖖

I was concerned when I learned the premise of the show. I get secondhand embarrassed when a show gets cringe. I fricking loved it.

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Even though I can't stand musicals and musical episodes, I'll concede that it was a good episode that moved the season's plot forward well. Even though I was squirming in my seat throught it.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 7 points 1 year ago

subspace rhapsody was amazing and if anyone tells you otherwise they're wrong

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I despise musicals so I just kinda went on my phone the whole episode while my wife enjoyed it.

[–] hactar42@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I thought it was fun and I enjoyed the episode more than I thought I would. That being said, I don't want them to do it again.

My 8 year old daughter absolutely loved it.

[–] saturnus@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Didn’t love it but definitely in favor of them having taken a shot at it

[–] Nacktmull@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

If they would have done more diverse kinds of music it might have been okay for me. However, I hate musicals with a passion, all of them! Anyway, I´m happy for you because you enjoy it so much.

[–] netburnr@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Same, I only watched like 12 percent of that episode.

[–] Nacktmull@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

After the first song I was like "but the next song will be a different genre, right? Right?"

[–] CarlsIII@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All of the negative reviews I’ve read were from people who never saw the episode.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

I have seen this episode, and I really wasn't a big fan of it. However, I've also seen the original series episode "The Way to Eden", and I'd rather watch Subspace Rhapsody ten times back to back than sit through the """"songs"""" in that episode ever again for as long as I shall live. Subspace Rhapsody may be more of a musical episode, but at least it's music instead of being dissonant navel-gazing trash. The songs in The Way to Eden make me hate hippies more than J. Edgar Hoover and Eric Cartman combined could.

[–] mister_flibble@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

A willingness to occasionally get goofy is honestly part of what makes Star Trek Star Trek imo. The lack of willingness to do that was actually something that kind of always bugged me about Disco. And this was definitely a fun as hell episode, especially the klingon boy band bit.

Im with ya. I cried at some of the scenes. It’s beautiful. I hope they bring it to Broadway 😂

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

I certainly loved it!

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

I loved it! And their explanation for why it happened was actually really good!

I normally don't like musicals...

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago

I prefer Subspace Emissary

[–] RojoSanIchiban@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I fully support all Federation citizens' rights to love what they want.

Imma just leaving that there without further qualification.
