Oh you mean we can't just cover Antarctica with Styrofoam? Shoot!

You joke, but just wait till the billionaires start enacting geoengineering schemes unilaterally.

[–] demonquark@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why would they do that? It’s cheaper to just build a mansion in newly tropical Svalbard island.

Hubris is the reason why billionaires do what they do most of the time. Trying to do geoengineering is precisely the kind of a grand scheme these people would try.

I hear Mars is nice this time of year.

Yeah I was only mostly joking.

I've definitely heard variations of calls to insulate and whiten the poles.

Same, also seen proposals for doing stuff like seeding reflective particles in the atmosphere and other wild ideas. I fully expect that at some point it's going to come to that because the disasters are going to lead to desperate measures.

Know what's really depressing... what may explain record warming this year was phase-out of sulfur fuel used in cargo ships 2020.

Sulfur emissions into the air kept warming lower than it should have been due to thr "global dimming" effect.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-how-low-sulphur-shipping-rules-are-affecting-global-warming/

So, I guess in a way geoengineering is already occurring... it's just really reckless and unmanaged. Feels bad. 😞

Yeah, the emissions we output can definitely be seen as inadvertent geoingeneering.

Crowdsourcing the apocalypse...

Someone said that it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism and unfortunately capitalism's making that more true by the day.

It really seems like a "we kill capitalism or it kills us" situation.

Absolutely, it's becoming increasingly clear that a system based on constant growth and consumerism is not compatible with sustaining the biosphere we all depend on in order to exist. Capitalism is driving us, along with most complex life on this planet, towards extinction.
