Hello, sh.itjust.works community!

A few months ago we began accepting donations to help cover the hosting and equipment costs of running this instance. We have been overwhelmed by your generosity and support! It truly exceeded our expectations. Thank you so much for helping to keep this instance running.

We would like to take an opportunity today to encourage everyone to also support Lemmy software development. We would not be here without the years of work that the software devs have put into creating this tool. There are certainly some users here with strong political opinions toward the lead developers. However, at the end of the day, we are all creating and maintaining this community together.

Nutomic recently posted a request for donations. Please take a look and consider sending some support their way:

Not giving a cent to those transphobes.

Honestly, given most of the devs' track record in terms of things like recognizing human rights, I'm not particularly comfortable with giving them money.

One alternative for those who still want to support the Fediverse without giving money to tankies and transphobes would be donating to content creators or even commissioning work that can be shared here. Artists and those who make the content we consume deserve to be paid for their work, and esspecially if this work is Fediverse OC (or coming from a supporter of the Fediverse) it will still help maintain or expand the Fediverse. A social network is as much the content and users on it as it is the tech behind it.

Another idea: Are there other fediverse compatible lemmy alternatives?

I think Mbin and Piefed are the two active ones.

Kbin

I don't know how it's going, but a friend of mine was against Lemmy from the get go and dropped out of taking part in it, because of the people that jumped onto Lemmy to develop and how impossible it was to reason with them.

Kbin died, forked to Mbin last I knew.

This is definitely a conflict for me. On the one hand, the money goes towards furthering the development of Lemmy. On the other hand, it goes towards (indirectly, but still) supporting Chinese and Russian online propaganda. Is there no one else contributing towards the development of Lemmy that we can donate to?

Directly. Nutomic and the other dev mod and manage the tankie instances, and Nutomic himself is a known transphobe.

set up $1 monthly. Not a lot but it covers my impact

New pinned comment from nutomic

Update: For those of you who want to support Lemmy development without financing the hosting of lemmy.ml, know that the hosting is paid exclusively through OpenCollective. You can see the payment details at this link. This means donations through all other platforms (Liberapay, Ko-fi, Patreon, Crypto) are exclusively for Lemmy development, and not a single cent goes to lemmy.ml hosting.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

... does that change who gets the money?

[–] Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 hours ago

No, it still goes to Dessalines and nutomic. This just clarifies that donations are split, depending on how you donate, to .ml or to ~~tankies~~ the development of Lemmy.

The reason nutomic made this announcement was because there was a vocal push back by some users who want to support Lemmy, but do not want to support the .ml instance costs.

[–] masta_chief@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Just set up $10/mo donations. Lemmy, the fediverse, and decentralization is incredibly important now, and we cannot afford to lose it

Yeah, regardless of your opinions of the devs it's probably a good idea to support the project so we can continue to expect updates in the future.

Damn, 2500 a month for developing software is all y'all want? That's an absolute steal. I appreciate the work y'all do, and glad you posted this. I wasn't aware of what happened to keep this site working.

wait why do they actually need money?

Lemmy already works

[–] xman080@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago

Lemmy is work in progress. New updates bring new features, fix bugs, ....

Good idea. Your link is formatted incorrectly however. Here's the post.

Edit:ironically I messed it up too.
