Without habeas corpus, you are no longer the land of the free in any sense whatsoever, you will become the land of the unlawfully detained without legal recourse.
If the courts lose their ability to free individual persons, the president or anyone else in the administration, police, ICE or other force can
SENTENCE YOU to LIFE IMPRISONMENT on a WHIM.
And there's not a single thing you or anyone else can do about it AT ALL.
I think more people need to understand that the doctrine is called that because it is fucking ancient. The first known example of a habeus doctrine comes from the 12th century. It massively predates everything in the US Constitution. It is one of the most fundamental personal rights ever.
And that's because without it, every other right is meaningless.
It doesn't matter what you have or haven't done. If your detention cannot be challenged, then the government no longer has to prove a crime. They just have to arrest you for whatever made up reason they like, and that's it, you're fucked.
And, this part is really important... It does not matter if they say it's "Only for enemy combatants / evil gang members / pedophiles" or whatever, because the government can just accuse you of being one of those things. The fact that you're not is irrelevant, because you don't have the right to challenge their accusation.
This is why due process matters. This is why everyone gets due process, because the second you decide that there is any kind of person who doesn't deserve due process, the government just has to accuse you of being that type of person, and then they can do whatever they want to you.

First they came for the immigrants, but I did not speak out, because I was not an immigrant.
Then they came for the students who protested Israel, but I did not speak out, because I was not a student, and I did not protest.
Then they came for the Hispanics, but I did not speak out, because I was not Hispanic.
Then they came for the trans people, but I did not speak out, because I was not trans.
Then they came for the gay people, but I did not speak out, because I was not gay.
Then they came for the Muslims, but I did not speak out, because I was not Muslim.
Then they came for the people claiming benefits, but I did not speak out, because I did not claim benefits.
Before all of this, they came for the black people who smoked a little weed, or shouted at cops who were shouting at them, and they locked them up and made them work for nothing or a nearly nothing wage, in prisons that profit from people who suffer for skin that's not pink and parents who were poor.
And when I asked my neighbour to not let his dog poop on my lawn, and he informed the authorities that I was disloyal to the president, they came for me, and my wife, and my children, and there was no one to speak out for me, and no one to defend me and no one to care because we had all run out of care, tired of turning our eyes from the despotic travesty of everything America was supposed to not be.
For me the movie Civil War really highlighted how much the aesthetics of civil breakdown and violence have permeated the culture via zombie and other apocalyptic media. When it happens people won’t even be that shocked
