We should probably start compiling a megathread.

[–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 1 month ago

That's a very good idea.

[–] LadyButterfly@lazysoci.al 8 points 1 month ago

Brilliant idea

Yes. It’s shutting down at the end of the month.

Not enough admins. Too many trolls.

[–] Monstrosity@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I had no idea my instance had such a shoddy rep!

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 34 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not a shoddy rep, just that it grew so large so fast with not enough admin volunteers. All of the big ones are constantly getting hit by these sad losers who need therapy

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

So then won’t this problem just move to another instance if .ee closes?

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

No, because most of the other instances are probably more prepared.

yea the purges from reddit, accounts for the sudden jump in users. and many of them were indiscriminately banned, plus now you have the increase of the trolls.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not necessarily @lemm.ee trolls; trolls from other instances starting shit in @lemm.ee communities, and they just don't have enough admins to handle things

admins got burnt out from stress, and yes its also due to the significant uptick in trolls, and propagands spreading, hard to control all of it, with no automatic filters, like reddit.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Automatic filters? What are those?

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

reddit and subreddits have filters that automatically remove content, and now reddit has AIs to automatically ban people and not give you a reason.

Aaaargh, I can already feel my power waning... All these moments will be lost in time, and so on.
On a lighter and more serious note, though, thanks to all the admins and mods that made this ride possible. You are the best.

trying out piefed over here! figured I'd try something completely different while migrating

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

PieFed is awesome 😎

There are several instances to choose from, though app support is still rolling out and for awhile may be hit or miss.

[–] mjhelto@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I really like Voyager for Android Lemmy browsing. I've heard others echo the app reference. I was unaware that the apps play a part in the features offered to Lemmy users, in regards to the instances someone uses. If I moved to an instance of piefed, will I still be able to use Voyager? If so, what piefed features may I miss out on?

Apologies if the answers to these questions exceed the info you were providing.

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm in the same boat with my Sync for Lemmy app. People discuss what their instance has or doesn't have, and it all goes over my head because I never see the webpage versions. But Sync is apparently abandonware, so I'll be looking to change things up. Moving to @Lemmy.zip, but I'll see how Piefed looks once there's a solid app.

No. There is a fork of Thunder, but afaik it hasn't made it into the main code yet (and I just tried it but it would not load any posts for me). Thunder support is probably not all that far away now, and Voyager may one day follow, but not today, so if Voyager is a must for you then you have to stay with Lemmy.

I just tried Interstellar and while it is getting better it's not quite there yet imho, e.g. clicking a link to https://piefed.social/post/815233 from inside it wants to open it in a web browser rather than simply go to the post in Interstellar.

I prefer the web browser interface to PieFed - it's fantastic. I liked Voyager too so I get it, but for me the features offered by PieFed far exceeds the fun of browsing on Voyager.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Voyager is also my favorite. So I'm sticking with Lemmy for the time being. I've made new accounts on both Piefed and another Lemmy instance.

Brings up the question if there should be a migrate community option on the back-end

Piefed actually has this. Shame lemmy doesn’t.

[–] GLC@feddit.uk 15 points 1 month ago

Started the sign up process and then my password manager told me I was already here.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The part that sucks about all this is that there aren't any tools to fully migrate my account over to a new instance. Comments and posts will be left behind, but at least they'll hopefully remain federated for as long as possible so I can look back at them in the future.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't understand what migrating an account could do besides making new, duplicate posts & comments and deleting the old ones, which would mess up comment chains and spawn even more duplicate posts with no comments on them than we already have.

[–] roserose56@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago

It would amazing if when importing, all the posts, would show up linking to them, just that and nothing more.
But I think this was discussed and its not going to happen.

Like a beautiful phoenix, you rise again from the ashes!

Welcome back

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 8 points 1 month ago

I think my new instance won't appreciate me migrating FuckableCars here...

[–] Rexios@lemm.ee 8 points 1 month ago (4 children)

The thing I like most about lemm.ee is the defederation policy. Supposedly lemmy.zip is similar in that regard so that’s where I ended up.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

i went on lemmy today, and considered .ca even if im not a canadian. i made one for world, but dint realize they blocked alot of the nasty instances.

I’m now on a few different instances. I was not expecting do have to do something like this, but I understand.

Thank you very much to the admins and mods of lemm.ee. I was on there for at least a year or so, and I will definitely miss the open federation they had.

[–] SlothMama@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

What happens to the communities and posts from those communities. Are they archived and accessible, or do they disappear once the instance goes down?
