Would you like some pie? Check it out here: https://piefed.ca/

What is PieFed

PieFed follows a similar format as Lemmy and Mbin. Those that are familiar with Lemmy will find it very similar, with some additional features including topic lists, optional private voting, new mod and admin tools, crosspost de-duplication, community wikis, etc. Thanks to how the fediverse works, you can use either lemmy.ca or piefed.ca to interact freely!

We will put together some guides on our non-profit's website at some point. In the meantime, we have created !newtopiefed@piefed.ca for us to learn from each other. There is also the official !piefed_help@piefed.social community which has a similar purpose.

We have done some testing and we are learning as we go, but please bear with us while this new platform gets going 🙂

I really want to use Piefed, but Voyager app is so, so good

[–] Hanrahan@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Same with Boost, I just don't use my piefed account becase no Boost support..

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Saaame. I created an account on the new Piefed but I’ll only fully switch over once Voyager supports it. I’ll be sad to lose my two year user history on Lemmy.ca though :(. I wish account migrations that kept comment/post history and account age were supported

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

Just link them on the bios and keep the same username. That usually does the job

Hopefully voyager dev takes a look at piefed integration. I would absolutely love to get back to voyager but for me getting away from lemmy was more important than sticking to voyager.

[–] moseschrute@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

@aeharding@vger.social mentioned working on Lemmy v1 support before considering PieFed. Lemmy v1 hasn’t launched yet.

I am considering adding support in my Lemmy client, but that likely wouldn’t be for a few months. And I also think Lemmy V1 would be the priority.

I'm in no hurry. If it comes within a year I'll be happy. If it takes longer I'll probably check it out unless some other app has come out that I'm also happy with.

For me it was the deduplication that takes me to PieFed. I'm only using Voyager at the moment as I'm lying on my side and the PieFed PWA rotates.

Here's hoping Voyager updates to support PieFed.

[–] CoyoteFacts@lemmy.ca 3 points 18 hours ago

Oh my gosh, I was just experiencing the PWA rotating thing and it was driving me nuts trying to figure out how to stop it. Nothing else on my Android auto-rotates, and I didn't immediately see any settings that could stop it. It seems like all PWAs created from Chromium (Vanadium to me) do this on my phone. I created the PWA from my Firefox app (Ironfox to me) and it seems to work fine, though it uses my installed Firefox extensions on the PWA - notably I have uBlock Origin set to block images above 50kB until I click them, which I have mixed feelings about using in conjunction with PieFed.

Strictly personal reason. When the lemmy devs asked for monetary donations I voiced my concern with Lemmy.ml, which they also maintain. In response one of the devs called me a cheapskate, so I decided I'm done with Lemmy until more normal people become maintainers

Edit: forgot to add that it wasn't the only reason. The devs themselves are rather controversial in their beliefs and moderation and I had reluctantly tolerated thoss things up to that point. The dev interaction was simply the last drop in the bucket.

[–] Ideonek@lemm.ee 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

What was your concern with lemmy.ml?

[–] belluck@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

They’ve got a lot of genuine tankies on there, and not just the „West is bad“ kind, but also a lot of „The Russian invasion of the Ukraine is justified and the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen“

[–] Ideonek@lemm.ee 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Thank you. I need to find new instance for myself because lemme.ee. can you tell me why you chose blahaj.zone? I don't want to support Russia in any way or form. It should be boycotted.

But I also think that crony capitalism will be our downfall. I try to reduce my reliance on US-based products, serviced and culture. Especially, on giants like google, disney, MS, etc. Boycotting US until they rethink they approach to allies like Canada, EU and Ukraine is also called for.

If you don't mind, what would you recommend to someone who would like their revolution with no gulags?

[–] belluck@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

I’m new to this as well, I just chose this instance to switch to (also from lemm.ee) because I’m queer and knew this instance did a good job keeping out assholes.

In general I think most instances on here are leftist or at least left-leaning. The general recommendation for lemm.ee users is currently lemmy.zip, if you want a dedicated political instance I only know of the anarchist lemmy.dbzer0.com (though they are too defensive of genAI for my taste) and the European Federalist feddit.org.

This thread has more recommendations by a more experienced user

[–] Ideonek@lemm.ee 2 points 6 hours ago

I'll look into it. Appreciate your time, thank you. I'm going to search "what instance would Brannan Lee Mulligan choose" and see where this get me ;) see you on the other side.

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

100%. Not just controversial but childish. It's completely poetic karma that they've become a minority in their own network. Repeating the same patterns that got them exiled elsewhere. Basically doing it all again. Having learned nothing.

[–] Nima@leminal.space 8 points 1 day ago

why get away from lemmy?

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 35 points 1 day ago (2 children)

People must really like Pie! We just did the same thing with Blåhaj Lemmy yesterday!

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago

It's nice timing! Looking forward to seeing you and your instance in the world of pie :)

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

Great minds think alike!

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then? I'm not really clear on how communicating freely between them works. I understand that's how the Fediverse supposedly works, but I have a Mastodon account and I haven't sorted out any way to post on/read lemmy content with it, so I'm not sure what the integration actually means in practical application? Maybe someone could help me understand.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

Someone else already gave a decent explanation :)

Can you try these two guide pages and see if they help? They have some diagrams

https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/get-started

https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/for-users/detailed-overview

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then

They are two separate platforms, made by different teams. The feeds look different for a few reasons

  • piefed.ca is brand new and so it is missing a lot of the content. As people start using it, the default logged out feed will start to look closer to other instances
  • An instance only pulls the content that its users are subscribed to. When you make an account on an instance and you are the first person to subscribe to a community, hitting subscribe will tell your instance to start pulling in those posts. That is why every instance will be slightly different regardless.

I'm not really clear on how communicating freely between them works

Unlike Lemmy and Mastodon, which are somewhat different formats (posts in communities) vs. short text posts on a user's profile), Lemmy and PieFed are more or less the same. So it should be a lot closer in experience. Whatever you can subscribe to, comment on, or vote on within lemmy.ca, you should be able to do the same on piefed.ca

Especially because we are running both instances, and so they will have similar block lists.

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then?

Separate things, just the same admin I guess. You can follow the same communities from either one.

I have a Mastodon account and I haven’t sorted out any way to post on/read lemmy content with it

On Mastodon, follow the account for this community, just Mastodon uses @ instead of ! so it's @fediverse@lemmy.world and you can post to the community by mentioning it

You can paste URLs of Lemmy posts/comments into the search bar of Mastodon to pull it up. Just make sure you use the real URL and not a mirror, so you need to get the URL from Lemmy's Fediverse icon it has on every post/comment

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

good! I feel like there needs to be more piefed instances

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What good clients are their for piefed? I've been using eternity for lemmy. Preferably something on fdroid

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 15 hours ago

Since the PieFed API was only enabled recently, there aren't that many apps out yet. !interstellar@kbin.earth is the one that people recommend right now. Voyager has plans to add it.

As more people use it, hopefully more apps will support it :)

[–] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Very tasty compared to the blue default :)

[–] Jerry@feddit.online 6 points 1 day ago

This is fantastic news!

[–] TinyLittlePuni@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Neato! I love the pie icon. I'll check it out!
