Like the title says, want to share my writing and also promote books that me and my wife have written. Where good place to gain a wide audience?

Sample of something I just started doing:

There's an instance called literature.cafe that has a lot of writing related communities. I see writing prompts somewhat often while browsing all. It's not the largest of instances, but it might be a good place to start

Wattpad, Smashwords, and AO3 come to mind for online writing/publishing platforms.

Probably depends on what kind of books you're writing. A lot of people who write web serials start at Royal Road for example.

My one published book is a sci fi novel. My wife writes fantasy, and non of it is web based. Except for the new thing I am trying out.

Thanks I will give it a try.

Just saw that there’s !writing@hexbear.net too, which has the largest number of subscribers. But Lemmy.world has that instance blocked, so you would need a different account to access it

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (3 children)

Why do they have it blocked?

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 11 points 21 hours ago

Hexbear has a reputation for being aggressively toxic, so a lot of the big instances have blocked them.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 9 points 21 hours ago

Because they're tankies.

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 5 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Lemmy.world defederated from hexbear because of political disagreements. They do stuff like that enough that I moved from .world to .ml a month or two ago.

[–] Flickerby@lemm.ee 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

.ml is another of the tankie triad instances that are typically blocked for context. On lemme.ee for their loose defederation policies and I'll be moving to .zip for the same, but I still block hexbear at the least because of how horrible those people are, rather bang my head against a wall than entertain that cess pool

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

covid@hexbear is the only hexbear sub that I read regularly and it's pretty good. I don't really notice different political stuff on .ml. I signed up because it says FOSS and privacy enthusiasts. Heard about the ML angle later, but it's not that visible afaict. People need to stop wigging out. Read what you want to. Don't like, don't read. There's no reason to let other people decide for you.

[–] Flickerby@lemm.ee 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I didn't block hexbear until a few months after joining and personally experiencing all the toxic vitriol that comes from there. They REALLY stick out. .ml hasn't been bad enough to where I can see a post and immediately go "oh yep that's from .ml" like hexbear

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 1 points 14 hours ago

I mostly just look at the communities I subscribe to, so I don't get exposed to much political spew these days. I'll only occasionally look at the "all" feed and maybe add a few new subscriptions plus see a bunch of uninteresting or annoying stuff that I ignore.

On .world, the most amusing thing is the amount of pr0n (from lemmynsfw.com) on the front page. I'm not anti-pr0n as such, but jeez, what is that doing there.

[–] Libra@lemmy.ml 2 points 20 hours ago

Yeah, same. I didn't know any better so when I moved from reddit a couple months ago I made an account on lemmy.world because it seemed to be the largest and most active instance, and then had a bunch of people in leftist subs tell me that was a bad plan so I made a .ml account too.

[–] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What has your day to day experience been like since moving to .ml, compared to .world?

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Not much difference except more communities visible, i.e. less censorship. I guess a little more random downtime. I still go on .world when that happens.

Wordpress makes it easy to publish without having to learn a lot of tech skills.
