EDIT: I decided on Mailbox.org!

Cross-posted from "Looking for a good e-mail provider that's not Tuta/Proton" by @Yingwu@lemmy.dbzer0.com in !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I'd like to use a third-party client like Thunderbird to handle my e-mails, which rules out both Tuta and Proton (I know Proton has their bridge, but I don't want to rely on it). I'm willing to compromise on my e-mails not being encrypted, as long as the e-mail provider has a reputation of caring about the customer's privacy. If I truly want to encrypt a message, I'll encrypt it myself. I've been looking at Mailbox.org, and while I've been hearing good things, people have also been complaining about their lack of support, outdated interface as well as that they don't enforce DKIM/DMARC which enables spoofing.

I would like to be able to use my own custom domain, but also to use their own domain for my e-mail aliases. EU-based only.

Any thoughts?

Good choice

Hmm I mentioned them in my post as I've been apprehensive about them, maybe it's unfounded though..

Turn on the filter for email about IMAP and you'll have all your options. You'll have to look up whether they allow custom domains though.

This is a better list than the ones I've seen previously. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know if Australia is to be trusted tbh

[–] InvisibleShoe@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Dont. Our encryption and privacy laws are garbage

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 month ago

As am Australian, do not trust us, we keep votong for politcans who are happy to use the no prowvacy dildo of consequence and use the CSAM/ terrorist trope to attack anyone against it.

Unfortunately no support for using their own domain as an alias. I want to use both my custom domain and their own.

Could you get the extra functionality you're after from addy.io?

Infomaniak? Thundermail? The latter only has a waitlist for now, unfortunately.

[–] Yingwu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks, but apparently Infomaniak has some privacy-related issues.

Now that I think of it, I do remember them asking for my address and phone number in order to sign up . . .

[–] Onyx376@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Exactly. I tried to create an account years ago, but when I saw it, I never tried again and completely discarded.

Disroot and Autistici are both good options that work with IMAP :D

For anyone reading this: Mailbox.org is great, alternatives I like too are posteo and disroot. I use Discord and am happy with it. Its free and optional one time fee upgrades are possible

Is it not possible to use thunderbird (or any email client) wirh tutu (or any email provider)? I thought you could plug in your email provider's smtp and imap/pop information and your account credentials into any app.

[–] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The way Tuta and Proton have set up E2EE is not compatible with Thunderbird.

Proton offers a "bridge" service that does local decryption for email clients like TB but it's an extra step and has to be running 24/7.

Ah. Thanks for the explanation .

I use posteo. The interface is nothing to write home about, but since I use thunderbird, this is not a dealbreaker (for me).

[–] Yingwu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately no support for custom domains.

Buy your own domain name, rent a mail-hotel, and you have the full control. Set it up with IMAP, and enjoy it in Thunderbird.

[–] Yingwu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As I wrote in my post, I already have a custom domain but I want to use both my domain and theirs.

[–] Core_of_Arden@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

If you have your own, why do you want to use theirs?
