As an American, I have no love for my country or its history. Europeans and their descendants around the globe, however, are quite hypocritical when it comes to the US. They have their own horrendous histories and currently do terrible things around the globe. They love to point to the US to take attention off of themselves, all while they enjoy taking US money and benefiting from the protection the US military industrial complex affords them. These benefits allow them to do wonderful things for their citizens, all while my brethren are held in bondage, murdered by the state and white supremacists, and homeless/ starving in our streets. It isn't too dissimilar to slave bonds. Europe condemned American slavery all while participating in the "slave bond" trade. Now they are all in a tizzy and butt hurt because the clown ass president said some mean things and started economic slap fights that primarily harm Americans. All that to say, anyone complaining about the US that isn't from Latin America, Africa, or certain Asian countries is just a hypocritical toddler throwing a tantrum.

You forgot the part where the USA has been loudly proclaiming itself "the land of the free" or "the leader of the free world" for the last 60 years. Most Europeans know about the flaws of their countries, that's why you don't see them shoving their flag everywhere. The USA has been terrible to other countries and their own citizens for decades while touting "freedom" and "American dream". Now that the lie has been exposed you feel hurt, but don't blame Europe, Canada or Australia: do something to improve you country.
That isn't remotely close to what I said. Wow.
America has had the capacity to care for its citizens for forever. It chooses not to, just as it chose to position itself as the world police. It's not because America has been too busy looking out for the EU militarily that there is no Universal Healthcare there. The story should really be a case of examining what North America vs Europe did after World War 2. America dismantled the protections of the New Deal, America caused the global financial crisis through Reganomics and neoliberalism. America is owned by fossil fuels and has suppressed nuclear power and renewable energy for almost 100 years. Now climate change is accelerating and causing global famine, drought and food shortages. American imperialism is just the same colonialism that Europe has been done with since 1945. Except now they beam propaganda into the heads of children 24hrs a day through the addictive technology and sophisticated profiling algorithms America created. People are not mad because tariffs, they're angry because America created this idea of a free global order and now we've been hamstringed into a plot. Orchestrated by American Corporatism, to collapse that same global order and disrupt our largely egalitarian, human rights focused society by igniting racial tensions around the world fueled by forced migration due to instability in that region caused by wars in the middle east driven by Corporate America's demand for oil. While America use the military superiority they have touted and expanded since then, on the basis of global peace, to threaten anyone who might question them and force politicians to give them cover for the extermination of brown people they're so thrilled about. FFS imagine the Nazis standing outside Auschwitz saying "These stupid Americans, they're so hypocritical. They don't see how badly we were sanctioned and blamed for world war 1. Why don't they see the hypocrisy in how they eliminated the native peoples during manifest destiny. They love to point to Germany to take attention off themselves."
I'm well aware of the issues in the US and caused by the government. Much of it affects me. My point is that Europe, Canada, and Australia have been happy to go along for the ride, as well as causing problems of their own. Now, every time I get on lemmy, I see these same people who have benefitted from these policies and actions saying "fuck ALL Americans," when there are so many of us that have been fighting this bullshit all while actually being victimized by our own government. Now that they're experiencing the slightest inconvenience, they want to cause an uproar and shit on everyone who happens to have been born here. It's hypocritical and gross. You didn't care before, so what changed? The only time I can recall in recent memory when any of these folks actually gave a shit about us was during the Floyd protests, which was certainly appreciated.
Where, where is everyone saying "fuck ALL individual Americans"? They're not.
Europe, Canada, and Australia have been happy to go along for the ride, as well as causing problems of their own.
Happy to go along with what? Global stability and trade? America develops nuclear weapons, demonstrates it will use them and then it's all the rest of the world's non-action that's the issue?
What problems has the European Union Caused for the world? Go on, I'll wait.
What policies specifically are you miffed with? That the rest of the white-European descended world went along with?
when there are so many of us that have been fighting this bullshit all while actually being victimized by our own government.
Yeah, you sure did a great job fighting it. I'm sure you were out there tirelessly campaigning against the GOP and spreading awareness of what would happen. I'm also sure you've had to deal with endless torrents of mean Europeans harassing you and telling you to KYS because of the last 250 years + Trump. Luckily, because you're so busy fighting, you probably haven't seen all those mean comments.
Stop Victimising yourself. Green Day came with American Idiot in 2004. You have had two decades to come to terms with criticism of modern American foreign policy in pop culture, act like it.
Now that they’re experiencing the slightest inconvenience,
Undermining global efforts to stop/reduce the climate catastrophe, the systematic erasure of personal freedoms, illegally tracking and spying on the whole world contrary to every law encompassed by GDPR which every American company agrees to to operate there. Creating the migrant crisis out of the middle and near east and creating the far-right after covid in order to exploit the economic recession, largely caused by the then American president's denial of science. The next global pandemic you're currently cooking up, the re-establishment of measles as a serious threat to Human life. The creation of Elon Musk and the Silicon Valley Technofascists through loans lent out by The US government. I can go on, endlessly. It is not "the slightest inconvenience." It is, emphatically, everything.
they want to cause an uproar and shit on everyone who happens to have been born here. It’s hypocritical and gross.
Well, now because of your countrymen, being born in Americ doesn't make you American, altgough there are still Americans who weren't born there. (For now.)
Complaining about American imperialism is not "uproar." What part of any of that qualifies as hypocrisy? You don't think people around the world have been criticising America for over a century? Buddy....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_the_United_States_government
You didn’t care before, so what changed?
Nothing, people have always been critical of the United States. But you never had reason to listen to those criticisms. Now, America is threatening, not just the global order, but our continued existence as a species on Earth. So, yeah, the criticisms are getting louder. That's what happens when you elect the Nazis. Germany still gets criticised, that was 80 years ago. You better get some thicker skin than that friend, because you're gonna hear a lot more and rightly fucking so.
The only time I can recall in recent memory when any of these folks actually gave a shit about us was during the Floyd protests, which was certainly appreciated.
Yeah, because the idea of egalitarianism is inherently part of what makes being European a thing. Because we didn't censor our history in school to create the myth of a monoculture descended from a group of British settlers. We are a collection of individual identities, languages and ethnic groups who form a union based on our similarities as humans seeking peace and prosperity through mutual co-operation. Which is why your media hates us, because you guys have created your own aristocracy and we don't like that.
Dude, you have to separate America the Federal State, VS America the Geographical location, VS America the idea, VS America the population that inhabit the United States and Territories. They are not the same thing. I get people might be mean to you on an individual level, but contextually you should be able to separate that from criticism of America. You should not feel the need to be personally offended at individuals who criticise the actions of the American State Policies. It's intellectually disingenuous to do otherwise and it doesn't make anybody -regardless of nationality- sympathetic to your personal situation to be indignant and act like you don't understand that. Or, the global consequences of the "slightest inconvenience" you have gifted to the rest of the world.
Not really.
true. could post it for last 250 and next 250. the us is the worst nation in the history of the world.
I just meant that America feeling like the center of the world's criticisms isn't the same as them being the center of the world's criticisms.
Really the rest of the world has said they're the worst during the Iraq invasion and subsequent tortures, and then there was a big gap, and now that same sentiment of "America is doing the worst thing right now" has only just been coming back recently (with the rise of Trumpian Fascism).
...so it's mostly when America shows its fascism that the world makes this complaint. Bush and Trump were both unprecedentedly bad times, and both on the right Republican side. The world had a point both times.
....but generally the rest of the world is off doing its own bad things, with huge gaps between saying America is doing "the worst thing right now".
i understand. however I, and know this is simply anecdotal, have thought for it’s entirety the US has been doing the worst it can in every epoch and been ranked “worst” in every one as well.
I don't think so, they've had fairly high transparency on most pf their elections, have a gopd numeracy and literacy rate, much of the protection of right has been pretty good outside of the enforcement side and some of the Children's rights issues (eg. Marriage laws and the private Child punishment industries).
I think most of the time they've been much better than most theocracies and authoritarian states. The US has had some prison labour but no where near as bad as say the Saudi system of slavery.
The US has bad patches, but they're far from the worst. Political freedoms there have mostly veen good up until recently.
Has had “some” prison labor? Dude. We had a war internally over this and some alive want to go back to slavery era rules.
I really don't think you can convert this Simpsons meme to being about the history of the US throughout all time (seems to be about the modern digital global, post 24 hour news cycle period of humanity we're currently in, I mean, it's an internet meme, so globalization and the Internet are the bounds of it)...
I think people like you, who get into this large political arguments with a totalistic "this debate in the comments will sort out the truth for all time" over a modern day meme are lame and stupid. It's just such a stupid game to be playing.
"This Simpsons meme is a commentary on the rest of the world's view of America during the civil war" is just - a stupid take in my opinion.
Oh? What amazingly wonderful country do you hail from?
the US, lol.
🤣
