I want to switch from my current gmail address so I thought it might be worth it to finally get a custom address for portability reasons

However I have no idea which service to choose Most of all, I really want to find a solution from EU, in particular that doesn’t involve any kind of USA companies

Porkbun to get a domain, and Protonmail or a similarly e2e encrypted mail host.

Thanks a lot, unfortunately Porkbun wasn’t useful for .it domains, so I ended up using INWX and Tuta as mail host, it seems to work well

Sounds like OVH would fit the bill for you. Check out their "Hosted Exchange" package.

are you looking for a domain registrar or an email provider?

for the email, i recommend mailbox.org or Tuta (both in Germany). maybe not Proton — i was going to use a custom domain with them myself, but discovered it's way too pricey.
