It's easy to remain ignorant of this by never going to TikTok.

[–] LoraxEleven@lemmy.world 22 points 11 months ago

Yep. Didn't know it was a thing. Probably won't, either.

[–] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Nope, the bus sometimes plays the radio and the radio plays those

[–] Gabu@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I'm truly glad that the only songs playing on public transportation where I live are smooth Jazz and Bossa Nova, then.

[–] Hider9k@lemm.ee 39 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Looking at that one artist who “remixed” the “I’m Blue” song and made something completely unlistenable and forgettable out of it.

[–] Lemmygizer@lemmy.world 25 points 11 months ago (1 children)

forgettable

Hard disagree here. I have a deep, seething, hatred for this song that precludes forgetting that travesty.

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 7 points 11 months ago

Her voice is nasally and grating. It takes an already annoying song and somehow makes it worse. The lyrics are uninspired and sound like the first thing she came up with ("I'm good, yeah I'm feeling alright" Are you kidding me? You dug a song out of its grave and insulted it with THIS?) and the "Let it go Na Na Na Na Na" part with her incredibly nasally voice makes me want to break something.

David Guetta and Bebe Rexha

Fucking hell this comes up on the radio every time I drive and I've had to borrow my mom's spare car while my bike is fucked. I don't mess the radio because I'll forget to turn it back, not that there is anything better on anyway.

I'm all for covers, it's interesting to hear someone else's take on a particular song, but remixes where all they change is just the pitch and/or tempo are just lazy and unappealing.

[–] BassaForte@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

A good remix changes the song enough to sound like a different song but with inspirations from the original. A bad remix just changes the tempo and layers garbage on top. Not all remixes are bad but many of them are low effort.

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 9 points 11 months ago

Or they add a bunch of trap/dubstep nonsense and lazy stuttered and repeated vocals. It's been done to death.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I personally don't like either. It feels like I'm the uncanny valley of music and it makes me want to hear the song I heard first.

What about when both are massively different?

Feint - Starscapes and Feint - Starscapes (Rameses B remix) don't sound similar to me at all, for instance. The original is too generic and uninspired.

[–] Aleric@lemmy.world 25 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's annoying and I feel the same way, but this video is worth a watch. Everything is a remix. There's a good chance the music from your youth being remixed was actually to some extent a remix itself.

Can here to post this.

10 years old and still a gem of cultural truth.

Literally showed my gf part 1 last night.

[–] Aleric@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Oh shit, it is that old! This whole getting older thing is wild.

[–] Kbin_space_program@kbin.social 24 points 11 months ago

In a word, Yes.

The music industry, like the movie industry and video game industry, wants guaranteed hits. What better way to guarantee a hit than to rehash some old thing that is now more than 7 years old. (And falling!)

[–] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 17 points 11 months ago

It happened to my parents' music, it's happening to my music, and it'll happen to yours as well, kids!

Just like Cherry Glazer ripped off Modest Mouse, just like Modest Mouse ripped off Crosby Stills Nash and Young, just like CSNY ripped off King Princess Edit: Ohio

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Dude, remember glee?

Fuck glee

[–] MonsiuerPatEBrown@reddthat.com 4 points 11 months ago

Glee !

It's a feeling you get

When your brain finally lets

Your heart get in its pants

[–] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Or dramatic tv shows here's a song you know the lyrics to, we slowed it down for DRAMA

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Take a happy song and make it sad by slowing it down. Never mind that the lyrics are still positive and happy.

I'll stop the world... And melt with you...

You know it's getting better... All... The... Time...

If you don't recognize him, you need to watch One Foot In The Grave. It's on BritBox, maybe elsewhere as well.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

I imagine more yanks will know him from the gas mask kid episode of Dr Who

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

If you don't recognise him, watch Keeping Up Appearances instead, it stood the test of time better, IMO

[–] qooqie@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Soon our childhood songs will be on the classics channels and the current classics will be moved to the ancient hits channels

[–] DeathWearsANecktie@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Who's going to be the next to rehash Robert Miles' "Children"?

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago

We're at the point of monkeys typing keyboards and waiting for entertaining things to come out of it.

It's not that the process changed or got better .... we just kept adding millions of monkeys to the system

AI is the equivalent of adding billions of monkeys and while they produce a lot of stupid senseless stuff, every once in a while it makes sense.

[–] mo_lave@reddthat.com 2 points 11 months ago

War... war never changes

[–] willya@lemmyf.uk 2 points 11 months ago

Dunno about TikTok, but it will be done so long as it runs numbers up. Just look at Jack Harlow trying it again.

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 months ago

Felix Cartel completely ruined You Get What You Give. Let's turn an upbeat, happy song full of energy into the most basic, boring, sleep-inducing track possible, where even the singer sounds bored and is half-singing. Plus the annoying repeated vocals typical of creatively bankrupt music.

They didn't threaten to kick Courtney Love or Marilyn Manson's asses in. Jokes aside, fucking awful cover.

[–] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Laughs in "what is that nice bit of Bach doing mangled in that pop song?"
