Great example .... this is why I reclaim most old lumber I find in an old house. Pine from a 100 year old even a 50 or 60 year old house looks like the one in the bottom while pine from a house from 20 years ago and earlier looks like the one above.

The new lumber is good firewood ... it makes excellent fire starter and kindling because it burns like paper ... a scary thought is that this is the kind of wood that makes up modern houses ... we are all living in fire starter. And every time I expose this new lumber, about half the time, parts of it already started to wet rot, dry rot or are infected with insects or disease.

The old lumber that is 100 years old can still be planed, shaped and used to make furniture or woodworking projects.

No they didn't

Never a good idea for a company to fire people who have information, knowledge and ability to cripple your company because they have intimate knowledge of every weak point and point of failure in the company's systems.

That was the Porn Borg .... they want to have your ass violated

It's more sadder than that

It's another effect of deforestation. Up until about 50 years ago, the 2x4 that were used to build houses came from trees that on average were about 60, 70 even 100 years old.

We ran out of those trees about 30-40 years ago.

Now most of the trees that are harvested for lumber are fast growing weaker trees that take about 10 - 20 years to grow .... and they don't even grow that big any way ... so the way they deal with smaller trees is to just harvest more of them.

Younger weaker trees will bend and twist more, break easier, not as strong and more suseptible to bugs bacteria and mold, because the wood is not as dense or hard.

I've always joked that you could batter a bunch of cardboard, soak it in buttermilk, cover it in spicy breading, do it again and deep fry it .... and you could base an entire restaurant chain around it.

Absolutely great film with a great cast ... I'll probably be rewatching it again soon, now that I'm thinking about it again

This whole timeline is getting so strange that I wouldn't be surprised if this actually happened.

My wife hates it when I use these terms for our kitchen and bedroom.

I happened on a bit of TV trivia a while ago. I enjoy watching a Canadian TV Show on CBC called ‘Son of a Critch’ … great show with great writing and acting … it’s simple, holky, funny, endearing … reminds me of the 80s show ‘Wonder Years’ … and it’s all based on a family living in the 80s in Newfoundland … all things I really love and enjoy.

One of the show regulars is Malcolm McDowell … who played Soran in the Star Trek film ‘Generations’ ... I also found it amazing that someone like McDowell was co-starring in this little Canadian TV show.

In the episode ‘Old Friends, New Friends’ - Season 2 Episode 10 … one of the guest actresses was Alice Krige … who played the original Borg Queen from the Star Trek film ‘First Contact’

It was really neat to see McDowell and Krige together in the same scenes in this episode … Soran, a mad man in search of eternity and the Borg Queen in search of eternal slavery.

The addition of text to the image (and inspiration for this post) was thanks to @ummthatguy@lemmy.world

My wife likes watching America's Got Talent with all their highlight reels and it got me to thinking, there's a business out there making a ton of money from parents allowing their children to perform for free.

EDIT: ... changed title from 'monkeys' to 'apes' ... thanks to @Diddlydee@feddit.uk for pointing it out

Did everyone notice how this election wiped out all the previous leaders and now we're faced with being introduced to a new crowd of political leaders.

Elizabeth May with the Green Party is the only one still standing.

Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 2 Episode 23 - Regeneration

The episode starts in the 22nd Century in the Arctic .... and the first thought I had was .... WE BEAT GLOBAL WARMING!!! Because there's still ice and snow in the Arctic.

Scott Thompson, a Canadian comedian famous as a member of the TV Comedy series 'Kids In The Hall'

Patrick Stewart, as Captain Picard with hair

Every call I've ever had that was a wrong number, misdailed number, pocket dial or whatever that wasn't supposed to be for me turned out to be a spam call or marketing call for something. Most of the time, it was a way for me to confirm my number to some dumb marketer.

For the past year or two, I answer all mysterious calls I don't recognize and put it immediately on 'mute'. If the person calling doesn't identify themselves ... I let them hang up first and then I just block the number. If they identify themselves with some weird marketing message ... I let them hang up and then block the number.
