And it's never quick, either, like "in 50 meters turn left", is it?

"In 50m stay in the left hand lane marked 'left turn only towards Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Eccles, M60, M602, M62, A580', then in 200m take the exit following signs for 'Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Eccles, M60, M602, M62, A580' then at the fork take the left exit towards 'Manchester, Salford, Eccles, M602, A580' and we've found a quicker route that saves nine seconds and avoids congestion on the M602 Manchester Approach Road West via the A580 East Lancashire Road and A580 Salford Bypass. To not avoid unselecting this not route don't unpress the button."

So accurate

[–] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 38 points 1 year ago (5 children)

You guys are using GPS with the voice unmuted?

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not if I'm going someplace unfamiliar, but if I'm just using it for traffic it's usually muted.

[–] FleetingTit@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

I feel like the voice prompts are especially unhelpful if I am unfamiliar with the roads. Looking at the map shows me the next one or two turns at a glance and also shows me which lanes I need to take.

[–] zuu@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Right? I muted it exactly for this reason

[–] Longmactoppedup@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I muted mine years ago after it wouldn't stop referring to roads by numbering systems instead of the actual names on the signs.

[–] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Honorable mention to when the directions on the screen have the name but the voice says the number anywat

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You're just constantly staring at the GPS instead of watching the road?

[–] exterstellar@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No man you glance at it like you would glance at a rear view mirror.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not so helpful after you miss your exit.

[–] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I Don't just look at the blue line, you gotta look at the upcoming direction too. A basic understanding of the next roadname you're turning on to/highway exit is all you need. Then just add the screen to any point in your rotation of rear mirror > left side mirror > rear mirror > right side mirror > front windshield [EVERYONE SHOULD BE DOING THIS ANYWAY] and you're good to go.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Right, and an audio cue decreases the load.

[–] i_am_hiding@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago

What's the "load" in looking at the "200m ➡️" in the top corner?

[–] MinusPi@pawb.social 1 points 1 year ago

Depending on where it's mounted it's plenty readable in my peripheral vision.

[–] FleetingTit@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

No. Not ever.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 32 points 1 year ago (2 children)

In two miles, continue straight.

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

Continue for ten miles...

Continue for seven miles...

Continue for thirty-five miles...

[–] Lt_Worf@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Attention everyone. Please proceed.

[–] SgtSilverLining@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nothing will compare to last week when I was listening to a podcast in the car. The GPS will pause podcasts instead of turning down the volume. So I heard "well, this looks like a MUR - turn right on baker st - DER!". I bust out laughing all by myself in the car.

[–] uberkalden@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Why can't we get gps to pause music in this case too?

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

"Turn right in 500 feet.. "

"Okay."

"On blab blah blvd"

"Okay shut up."

"Route 32/128/64"

"FUCK"

" And then follow rt 3 for 2 miles"

"ARE YOU DONE??"

Silence. Music resumes playing.

"SPEED TRAP AHEAD. WE FOUND A FASTER ROUTE."

Just.. turn it off then? GMaps has a setting that only plays a sound when you take a wrong turn. If you keep half an eye on the navigation this works very well.

[–] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

🔇 ... 🎵🎶 🤘 Keeping that shit on silent is the way to go.

I would but I like the robot telling me what to do

[–] theforkofdamocles@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Happened to me yesterday. Also, you can replace GPS voice with backseat toddler voice.

“Quiet please, Daddy wants to hear his song.”

[–] Lt_Worf@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Daddy can't headbang to babbling.
