Now what this needs is a remake that removes all of the charm and atmosphere

With microtransactions by Konami.

Power to the player!

[–] echo64@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

they already made one, today is the 14th anniversary of it, so I'm pretty sure it counts as Retro too

[–] GONADS125@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The graphics aged gracefully, but I wouldn't call them beautiful. I would definitely say the lighting is beautifully done tho. That's what really completes the atmosphere imo.

personally, im a huge fan of ps1 graphics so this may be unique to me and others like me. its certainly beautiful to me haha

[–] GONADS125@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Oh no I get that. It really just depends on the game for me. Parasite Eve 2 is one of the prettiest games ever to me. There is something special about that era and the level of detail they were able to paint with the limited graphics.

Also realizing there's the missing ingredient of a CRT screen, which is what brings it all together. Might change my tune seeing Silent Hill on a proper screen again.

I feel you. Warcraft 3's original graphics will always have a special place even if they are trash by today's standards.

I think nostalgia plays a big part.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

I like the visuals and gameplay, but Silent Hill 2 will reign as the supreme Silent Hill game. The remake won't hold a candle to the original. Literal lightning in a bottle that cannot be recaptured.

[–] Lunar@lemmy.wtf 7 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I am playing through it at the moment.

Someone didn't like your contribution, friend, although for the life of me, I can't glean why. Oh well, you have my support.

enjoy! it's such a unique experience

[–] Lunar@lemmy.wtf 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah. It's one of the only Silent Hill games I haven't finished. I am enjoying it.

This and fatal frame gave me nightmares as a little girl. I need to play them both again.

[–] ExtraMedicated@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Both SH1, and Fatal Frame are two of the very few games that gave me an actual sense of dread while playing. Most horror games don't even come close.

[–] calavera@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Fatal Frame 2 was so good, gave me a lot of goosebumps playing it back then

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I get why people love SH2, but I don’t get why people overlook the original. And they’re remaking SH2 and skipping the original, which is sad imo

Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid make very, very good use of PS1 hardware and the stylistic choices just enhance that. The abstract textures of silent hill make everything look fleshy or rusty. MGS has that cool shadowy look which is perfect for sneaking.

[–] greedytacothief@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

I love that PS1 horror/aesthetic is making a comeback in the indie scene

[–] FlavoredButtHair@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Playing this and RE1 was scary at night. Fun, but scary.

[–] namelivia@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I really liked silent hill 1 but to me silent hill 2 was even better

[–] BurningnnTree@lemmy.one 2 points 11 months ago

I agree, I've always thought Silent Hill is the best looking game of the PS1/N64 era.

[–] F4stL4ne@programming.dev 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I replayed recently and it's still a blast!

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

i need to play it again. what's your fave part? i have to say midwich elementary is mine, because it terrified me so much. i also enjoyed the hospital

[–] F4stL4ne@programming.dev 1 points 11 months ago

Hospital and Nowhere are my fav areas. I like also the city at night in the dark world, it gives a really great madness atmosphere.

[–] squiblet@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

I never had a PS1 but had always heard of this game and wanted to play it, so I did it on emu a few years ago. Thought it was pretty cool... gameplay wise, kind like the evolution of the Genesis game Flashback.

[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's a completely different genre but if you are fine with FPS games, you may wanna check out Incision. It's art style might be up your alley:

(I'm NOT affiliated with the game or the reviewer in any way, it just seems to be the latest review while all the others are from when early access launched.)

Did they ever remaster silent hill? I'd love to play it as I never have but I doubt I could handle the gameplay

[–] o__math@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I'm more of an classic RE guy, and maybe it's nostalgia, but there is something that feels like home with these graphics. I've seen some modern games emulate them very well and with the right design they can crank up the creepy/scary factor.
