I didn’t realize that this was like a Fibonacci-esque situation. That’s a lot of birds.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.world 22 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I only learned this recently because my wife and I watched a Christmas movie where this fact was a major plot point haha.

[–] SnowmenMelt@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I also watched that movie yesterday. It was bad.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

It’s definitely not as good as some Christmas movies I’ve watched recently but I wouldn’t say Candy Cane Lane was bad.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago

I know nothing about that movie except what is on the poster.

So I'm guessing the plot revolves around Eddie Murphy being paid a lot of money to make films he doesn't want to be in. His eyes just look like somebody has hollowed him out.

Dolomite Is My Name was really good, and genuinely seemed to be the first thing since Coming To America that he looked like he wanted to be in, but it appears his career is in the toilet again.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I wouldn’t say it was good though…

[–] NightAuthor@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Well, I guess I gotta know what movie this is now

[–] meliaesc@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Candy Cane Lane, probably

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Yes, it’s Candy Cane Lane.

She's probably upset about the 140 human slaves she was gifted

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

None of my cook books even have a recipe for pipers, what am I to do with them?

[–] RGB3x3@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Put them in a pie.

That's what makes them Pied Pipers

[–] jasondj@ttrpg.network 2 points 11 months ago

That’s the last time I go over the Lecter house for Shepherd Pie.

78 birds in total. They're all birds. No humans or gold.

First day of Christmas: 1 partridge in a pear tree

Second day of Christmas: 2 turtledoves

Third day of Christmas: 3 French hens

Fourth day of Christmas: 4 calling birds (blackbirds)

Fifth day of Christmas: 5 golden rings (pheasants)

Sixth day of Christmas: 6 geese a-laying

Seventh day of Christmas: 7 swans a-swimming

Eighth day of Christmas: 8 maids a-milking (magpies or cattle egret)

Ninth day of Christmas: 9 ladies dancing (lapwings)

Tenth day of Christmas: 10 lords a-leaping (cuckoos)

Eleventh day of Christmas: 11 pipers piping (sandpipers)

Twelfth day of Christmas: 12 drummers drumming (ruffled grouse)

[–] xantoxis@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

This is an impressive post. You have:

  1. Misunderstood the plain language of the song, in which each thing is given on every successive day following its first appearance (not simply one time each),
  2. Presented a niche theory about the meanings of the lyrics as if it is fact, and
  3. Missed the joke.

Other lemmy users: bring your A game, the standard has been set

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago

I'm still trying to hold up that the 12 days of Christmas starts on Christmas Day, Dec 25. And finishes on the Twelfth Night (like the Shakespeare play).

Of course she's mad.

According to the first result in Google, the last line is repeated, so you missed one.

1+3+6+10+10+16+23+23+23+23+23+24=185

[–] MacNCheezus 6 points 11 months ago (2 children)

That seems like a very minor nitpick to get mad about.

[–] TAYRN@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago

Hi, first day on the internet? Let me show you around.

[–] LaserTurboShark69@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago

Oh buddy he's pissed

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 8 points 11 months ago (3 children)

The total number of birds is actually only 23:

7 swans 6 geese 4 calling birds 3 French hens 2 turtledoves 1 partridge

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 54 points 11 months ago (2 children)

But each day repeats the previous days birds

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 19 points 11 months ago

I never thought of each day including a completely new set of all the previous ones.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I always assumed it was just a recap. Why would you keep giving someone the same thing over and over?

[–] Vash63@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago (2 children)

No, it's pretty clear grammatically. "On the second day of Xmas my true love gave to me x AND y". That doesn't mean she got Y the day before.

[–] MBM@lemmings.world 8 points 11 months ago

Maybe the singer refuses the gift every time, so their true love keeps adding more

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The "and" is always before the last item, the partridge in a pear tree, because it's at the end of the items that are being listed off. The singer is saying what they got that day and then recapping what they now have in total.

It can be interpreted the other way, of course, but I prefer this way because it just makes more sense. Hard enough to give someone 50 people compared to 140!

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

It's the only interpretation of the song that makes any sort of sense. Which brings the total up to 364.

JRR Ho Ho Hokien, @joshcarlosjosh

you okay, babe? you've barely touched the 184 birds I gave you over the course of the 12 days of christmas

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Given the age of the song, all those birds are in whatever pie OP is having for dinner.

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago
[–] Spaceballstheusername@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I never got why people always think the singer gave all the gifts each day. I always took it as they were just listing all the stuff the singer got them over these past days.
