The U.S. Embassy in Haiti on Wednesday urged citizens in the Caribbean country to leave "as soon as possible" citing security and infrastructure challenges, as escalating violence has left thousands displaced and sent homicides soaring.

"U.S. citizens in Haiti should depart Haiti as soon as possible via commercial or private transport," the embassy said in a statement, urging extreme caution.

An escalating gang turf war in Haiti has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis that has displaced around 200,000 nationwide and left some 5.2 million people - nearly half of Haiti's population – in need of humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations.

France should do something against the giant mess they created on that island

In fairness to France, weren't they kicked out of Haiti like 198 years ago? That feels like asking Spain to intervene to stabilize the Venezualan economy.

Not being facetious, genuinely curious what I'm missing.

Ehhh.... It's complicated. Pretty much every western power in the world to blame. After orchestrating one of history's only successful slave rebellions, pretty much the entire western world took turns punishing them for it.

Slave rebellions were one of the scariest scenarios to the great powers, seeing one actually take off was terrifying to colonial powers. No one moreso than America, who then spent the next 200 years making a mess of the island. Including a 20 year occupation in the beginning of the 20th century.

If anything it's a valid response to people who pearl clutch the massacre they launched on their invaders as justification for their poor state today. Like bruh, Toussaint's been dead for quite awhile, why do the people of Haiti have to be held accountable for that today?

We usually only commit to "help" to protect current economic colonialist interests (hence French presence on the African continent).

But doing something to help after creating messes is not something my country does, sadly.

Best we can do is make it worse, that's about it

You could go there and unite the people by giving them a common enemy, as a German I have undeniable proof that it works.

Instructions unclear made them genocidal against Oklahomans.

Haïti was dealt a bad hand from the start. It's been living through disaster after disaster since it gained independence.

For the longest time, Haïti had to pay reparations to France, its former colonizers. The ordinance was in place until 2016, and greatly limited Haïti's economic potential.

This is on top of Haïti's geography that makes it very prone to earthquakes.

Poverty = inequality = violence = humanitarian crisis.

Each fiefdom's (nation's) ruling class is desperate to find ways to keep up with the others.
