[–] Pantsofmagic@lemmy.world 19 points 8 months ago

Selfish pricks with bad middle management probably.

Lots of companies will block their product on Linux so they don’t have to worry about bugs/glitches impacting their playerbase

Actually, fun story, someone was cheating under wine and posted it on the Roblox forums which is what caused all this to happen.

This is the same energy as when I put in a genuine effort into a relationship I know is toxic and they're the ones who end up blocking me.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Well, there it is, the update for Roblox has arrived that now forcefully blocks it from working with Wine on Linux systems (like Steam Deck).

Roblox has always been somewhat iffy to play on Linux, at times being broken while people working on the likes of Grapefruit and Vinegar repeatedly kept up with changes to make it work.

The Roblox developers then introduced Hyperion anti-cheat software, but continued to make it work unofficially with Wine but that wasn't to last as a developer explained that it has caused cheating.

Despite what you may think of Roblox (and it's historically had plenty of problems) as one of the biggest gaming platforms ever, it's certainly a shame to see it go.

There's plenty of people out there that have Roblox as their main thing, and so not being able to do it on Linux is quite a loss.

Any game that intentionally prevents it from working on Linux is a loss as it just increases the uphill battle Linux has as a gaming platform.

The original article contains 207 words, the summary contains 171 words. Saved 17%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

No it isn't. No it fucking isn't. That would be like if newgrounds shut down, one of the biggest platforms for pedo-nazi shit that just so happened to be a hub for flash games. Eventually you have to come to grips with the fact that the abuse is their export, not the games, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them going belly-up and taking their bullshit with them.

Seems like I’ve missed a lot of articles surrounding where this hate comes from.

Summary: They created an empire where they profit off the abuse of child labour and expose these same children to dangerous environments. They're basically grooming children into exploitation at every level and making absolutely bank off of it. You can't even say that they're getting life experience because the tools they're required to use to make games are proprietary and offer no transferrable skills.

You’re being serious?

[–] exocrinous@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

TL;DR: child labour

Can’t comment on the site but alternatives to Roblox are Fortnite (doesn’t work on Linux) and Core (haven’t tested)

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 9 points 8 months ago (3 children)

How much has Fortnite changed that it is now an alternative to Roblox?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

You can use unreal engine to make any mod you want

[–] TheOakTree@beehaw.org 1 points 8 months ago

A ton, actually. I'm not very engaged in it, but every time some friends convince me to play something on Fortnite with them, I can't help but notice the section of hundreds and thousands of gamemodes with custom rules, items, mechanics, and so on.

For example, I see many clones of bed wars from Minecraft, third-person CoD clones, RP servers, base/colony building gamemodes, zombie survival modes, etc. It effectively has a sandbox game maker inside of the regular Fortnite, alongside Rocket Racing (racing game) and Fortnite Festival (rhythm game). It's a very fleshed out environment, although it doesn't have the same potential for custom assets that Roblox does.

Fortnite? it's a coop zombie shooter base building game, how tf is it an alternative to roblox
