I dunno about this; IME even when it was highly approachable most people didn't do it. I was around back then, got my first Commodore in '84, and even the Geek / Nerd circles were mostly just for people swapping copies of commercial software. It wasn't any better when I graduated High School in '91 and even in College almost no one outside of STEM was doing any programming.

It wasn't and still isn't a popular activity.

Election Interference so blatant that the EU started formal proceedings.

Multiple studies, including a very recent one by Rutgers and NCR, showing it's a pro CCP propaganda vehicle.

It lied about collecting precise user data.

It lied about whether that data was accessible to ByteDance and it lied about not using that data to track people.

The problem with TT isn't it's content, the "food pictures and people being nice to each other" you referenced, its with how TT uses its algorithm to influence its users and the risk of them misusing the data their app collects.

What is owntracks useful for?

[–] Buelldozer 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yes and they don’t want foreign actors to have it…

They really don't mind the westernized countries having it. Hell they share it with other 5 Eyes countries. What they very much mind is adversary nations having it.

You would think they would see this security vulnerability a decade ago

The NSA was publicly warning about this in 2020 as part of the original "Ban TikTok" push. The DoD was working to limit location data on smartphones at least as far back as 2014 and they got the warning to do that from the NSA.

Nah, Teton County is easy to understand although I do question how they have a higher percentage than Albany County. What I'm really wondering about though is that orange county in South Western Colorado. WTF is that about?

He just wrote what we were all thinking.

Without being a dick I'd like to submit that if you're thinking about politics in relation to the FDA banning a food substance then it may be time to back off just a bit.

Gallows humour is...

It's not "Gallows humour", its just posting more American Political hypeshit where it doesn't need to be.

Wait until you learn about “libraries.”

I still remember the smell of Card Catalogs; a nice mix of old paper and even older wood. Video instructions are often faster and easier to understand. They're also more accessible.

Everyone can live their lives without TikTok, YouTube...

I was an adult before YT and I don't want to go back to a time before it existed. It's just too damn useful as a self education tool. Need to learn how to DIY a plumbing problem? Youtube. Need to learn how to subnet a network? Youtube. Interested in the History of Moldova? Youtube.

I finished my basement by watching youtube videos and learning how to do everything from framing to electrical to drywall to finishing work. There isn't anywhere else you can freely get the same breadth of knowledge on-demand.

If the ban was effective immediately a bunch of things would have to be pulled from shelves and that would impact everything from Acetaminophen to Maraschino cherries to some vegetarian faux-meats. There's over 9,000 (lol) products across a wide number of industries that use Red 3.

M365 runs on Azure which is why is why I phrased it the way I did. Although in retrospect I should have said Azure / GCP or M365 / Workspace instead of mingling the terms.

This is why both Google and Microsoft dumped untold billions of dollars into developing Azure (Microsoft) and Workspace (Google). Those OS agnostic corporate productivity suites are meant to keep those companies relevant.
