The reason American cities and towns look so unappealing and built so poorly is that they were designed under capitalism, which exists to maximize profit, not to confirm to any cultural standard, ideas, or aesthetic.

Even to the very end, they turned their nose up to the working class people of Schitts Creek, instead of getting a better understanding of the conditions of the working class. They still absolutely hated Roland in the end; his working class aesthetic was constantly the butt of the joke.
My favorite part was when they lost everything in the first episode. But yeah, they did kind of give up on them not having any money, didn't they?
