When you find a suitable replacement for GBoard, let me know. Actually don't, I've tried them all and they all fall well short of Google's prediction algo.

The hacky workaround is to send them via Beeper, which connects to Google Messages' web client.
I don't know that anyone has collected any sort of data on reliability. I have a CWWK board that's been working well for about a year now.
The following devices are end-of-life, no longer receive firmware or driver security updates, and receive extended support from GrapheneOS via a legacy branch based on Android 14 with only the Android Open Source Project security backports, certain other security patches, and other minimal changes to keep them working:

They offer several years of "extended support"
Well the bad news is that GOS only runs on Pixels. The good news is it will be an easy choice. Just choose the latest one that fits your budget. Pixel 8+ will give you desktop mode, if that's important to you. The other good news is that Pixels get 7 years of updates so you can choose a cheap used one and use it for a long time.
I dunno if "falling in line" is the right phrase. I'm sure no company ever wanted DEI. It's just something they felt pressured to do.
I'm poor and have been eating a lot of pasta but I do like to play around with different sauces. My last one I made with Butternut Squash.
then being mad for getting kicked out for violating basic rules
They were kicked out for intentionally violating anti-competitive rules. It's bullshit. And it's sad to see anyone at all defending Google here.
Why would anyone even want that?
RCS would only be an upgrade if it was possible to use with an open client and federated. As-is there are only 2 proprietary apps and 1 server, as far as I can tell. It's basically Google's version of WhatsApp.
