Good call. Even digital markets are markets and shouldnt be monopolized

[–] arcterus@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I still don't understand how some people find this controversial given how important mobile devices are to people now.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 13 points 3 days ago

A lot of people think fragmentation of digital markets will deliver a worse experience.

While it does add a tiny amount of friction, the trade-offs are massive.

[–] Ilandar -5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think it's mostly just the "China = BAD" factor because of Tencent's part-ownership.

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe it's because Epic sucks and are total hypocrites. Google absolutely deserved to lose in court, but Epic and Sweeney can go to hell.

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

they would suck less if they got off their asses and made a sequel to Jazz Jackrabbit 2

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hah, indeed. That Epic is long dead, just like the Id that made Commander Keen and the Blizzard that made Rock n Roll Racing.

Epic might be most extreme example of the three, it has at least four periods that might as well be completely different companies.

TIL Jazz Jackrabbit was made by Epic! I thought the only game by Epic I had played was Unreal Tournament. I have fond memories of spending hours in both those games. Didn't play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 as much, but I remember I liked the soundtrack.

Sundar and Tim don't appreciate you

[–] network_switch@lemmy.ml 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

For anyone that hasn't tried it, the EGS store with 3rd party games for Android released back in January. Since then they still haven't added a library/purchased view. You just scroll up and down to find where the games you own among games you don't own. If it helps a company that makes a better store/game platform popular, sweet. If it's just EGS and most other stores like on PC, it'll be a nothing burger. If no one tries to actually improve on Google Play for customers, these stores are going to be glorified game launchers/advertisers

[–] Canadian_Cabinet@lemmy.ca 29 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A crappy mobile app is par for the course for EGS, considering how bad their desktop app is

[–] network_switch@lemmy.ml 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Along with the desktop store, it's like epic and Tim specifically try to do as little as they can and then get mad at the lack of user adoption. I hope O3DE and Godot keep developing and gain in adoption to topple unreal engine and more games come out and eat away at Fortnite. If their cash cows went into decline maybe they'd start doing more than what they think people should accept as the minimal viable product to spend their money on

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If Half Life 3 was made using Godot, things would get wild.

Be crazier and huge boost to FOSS game development tools to open source the latest version of Source 2 but it's probably full of proprietary middleware that would have to be replaced to make usable in an open source state

[–] artyom@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Honestly it's pretty crazy that Steam hasn't entered the most lucrative gaming market.

[–] blindsight@beehaw.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Epic winning this case might just open that for them.

On the other hand, do they want to enter the mobile market? They're a privately owned company, so they don't have the same shirt sighted pressures to chase exponential growth endlessly, like cancer. They are already making money hand over fist.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

I don't know. Just because they're not a publicly traded company doesn't mean they don't want more money 🀷 but certainly they may want to "stay in their lane" and focus on what they're best at. Just seems like an absolute fuckton of money they're leaving on the table to me.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Even if you are against epic for valid reasons, you have to admit that competition is good and they're not going to be the only challenger.

[–] zod000@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Let's hope we do in fact get other challengers because Epic is the last company that I want to succeed as a major platform.

[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I hope F-Droid comes to EGS. Tim Sweeny is a crusader for openness after all…

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

Why would anyone even want that?

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

I don't see that happening

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

all i see is two monkies in a suit fighting in a cage.

every 3rd party store should have been allowed on the play store...except epic, for trying to fuck over basicly both sides and circumventing payment. then being mad for getting kicked out for violating basic rules, just because of greed.

best part is, the playerbase was trained for gambling, not for apk install, so the userbase flopped even in an already open invironment.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

then being mad for getting kicked out for violating basic rules

They were kicked out for intentionally violating anti-competitive rules. It's bullshit. And it's sad to see anyone at all defending Google here.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

This is great news for anyone who is affected!

I'm sure a lot of us here won't even notice.
