It was fine thanks. Booked a bit of a last minute holiday so we're looking forward to that!

The battery is a Sunsynk L-Series.

Luckily the whole package is VAT free, apparently that ends in 2027.

They're partnered with EDF although you don't have to use EDF. Unfortunately we don't have an EV yet, and won't for a while as I'd rather run our current car into the ground!

The quote I received from the local company (the 12x 465w) panels has come to £8,500ish, including installation. I might ask to see what it is with a 10kWh battery, and see if it makes sense. I did wonder if 5kWh would be enough throughout the winter, I'd imagine it might be only enough to get through the peak period.

Octopus's provisional quote was £2k extra although I need to give them more specific information, so that quote might come down.

The way our roof is means we'd basically use all of it and it's facing east/west which should give us a longer sunlight duration.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago

Exactly. There's a high chance of me dropping a panel off the roof, or worse, myself.

How are PeerTube instances funded? I'd imagine that the cost of running an instance is significantly higher than a Lemmy instance.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

True, but in order to make it a healthy viable alternative to centralised platforms then there needs to be a financial incentive for creators to use peertube. I guess any creators who give a shit about this kind of thing could upload their content to both platforms, but doing so could have an impact on their YouTube earnings.

Early youtube was beautiful precisely because it was normal people making videos as a hobby, not trying to earn money.

It was also a novelty as it as very new, but the quality of content being put out now is significantly higher than it was in 2005.

I'm going to start looking for a new phone soon to replace my OnePlus 6T, and the 13 looks so good, except for the fact it's absurdly huge. I wish the 13T was released globally!

I think the only other option is the pixel 9, but not sure about battery life and slower charging.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago

Good to know, cheers!

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ah damn! No warning at all? Do you know how long you expect the power to be off for?

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Cheers for your advice! Honestly it's extremely unlikely I'd do it myself. I'd need to get at tonne of scaffolding and I wouldn't know anything about attaching the panels to the roof or doing any of the wiring!

On a normal system, if the grid goes down you cant use you solar or battery(may not be a problem for you), for this you need a back up box with off grid capability.

Is this because there's no way to dump any excess electric back into the grid? I don't think this is too much of a worry for me though, I don't recall a power outage in the past 8 years of us living here! touch wood

Is this the Finnish equivalent to a cockerel crowing in the morning?

I receive a weekly email from ClearTheLobby that provides details about what's on the agenda in parliament this week. I thought it might be interesting to post the contents here.

This week's government bill takes an interesting turn.

MPs are set to vote on an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill which would decriminalise abortion. It's a free vote, so MPs aren't bound by party positions.

Expect the Israel-Iran conflict to feature.

We'll probably get an emergency statement from the foreign secretary or one of his colleagues.
