One might ask, then, why he looked perfectly comfortable this March speaking at an event celebrating the creation of Pakistan, a country that privileges Islam and has ethnically cleansed most of its Sikhs, Christians and Hindus.

The would-be mayor’s views on India are also strident. He has called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “war criminal” for the 2002 Hindu-Muslim riots that took place on his watch as chief minister of Gujarat. In 2023 Mr. Mamdani signed a statement condemning Mr. Modi’s visit to New York.

On India, Mr. Mamdani has staked out partisan positions on everything from proposed agricultural reforms to the election of a communist mayor in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Mr. Modi and his party aren’t above criticism, but Mr. Mamdani’s understanding of his ancestral homeland is cartoonishly lacking in nuance.

At a job fair in Berlin, the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, has set up a recruiting booth staffed by Marco Mann, who has recruited at fairs like this for 18 years. He says the German public's attitude toward its armed forces is improving.

"I never used to hear 'Thank you for your service' from others, but that's starting to change," he observes. "People now are thanking us for our support of Ukraine, thanking us for being here — it's a nice change."

It's still a pretty generic concept like most of the other country ateji. 仏 on the other hand is heavily associated with Buddhism which you'd think could lead to a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Whenever I see that character from now on I will think of Fr*nch people oooaaaaaaauhhh

The law targets "explicit descriptions of gay sex or other sexual perversions". Heterosexual depictions often have more leeway - works by acclaimed Chinese authors, including Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, have graphic sexual scenes, but are widely available.

Presuming this is accurate, the state of Chinese obscenity laws just fucking sucks ass (which I assume is also illegal). It's the 10 year jail sentences that are the single most awful thing about all of this though. Taking away their earnings or nuking the offending content from the internet is one thing, but imagine putting some 20-year-old in prison until they're 30 because of some mpreg fanfic they sold as a side hustle

If I recall correctly, one of the big reasons yaoi became so popular with women in Japan was because they felt gay relationships, or at least the sorts of fictionalised gay relationships featured in manga etc, were free of the rigid gender roles in more traditional romantic stories and Japanese society in general

Bethesda didn't want to make a proper CRPG with actual dialogue trees and speech checks so this is what they came up with instead

Even making random townspeople like you by impressing them with massive farts in Fable makes more sense

This shit drives me up the wall even more than "unalive"

You can't stop people saying slurs but an entire generation will subconsciously alter their entire vocabulary because they grew up on corporate platforms with very heavily moderated text chats and comment sections and they ended up internalising the filters matt-joker

Edit: I was not aware of the AAVE origins of "ahh" which pushes it more towards the territory of legit slang. Still, I stand by my general point about automated moderation influencing language being bad

Authorities looking for a man dressed like a gay cowboy

Got tired of all the game's mild survival elements being just set dressing you could mostly ignore so fuck it, now Arthur has to worry about hunger, thirst, temperature, sleep, weapon carry weight and pissing while another mod promises to add limb injuries that give you specific debuffs

I tried adding hunger and thirst meters to my horse but she kept collapsing from thirst with no body of water or trough in sight and there's no way to give water to horses

I also drastically limited my ammo limits and tried making combat more deadly for both the player and the NPCs. I would love to do something about the economy too but those mods seem a bit janky

Word of warning: RDR2 is held together by duct tape and dreams and adding mods may make wildlife, NPCs and trains stop spawning, especially mods that add or change models and textures

Not sure how the tariffs being worked into the prices instead of being paid separately would change anything for the Yanks stuck with paying them but by golly he sounds so confident about it

Does he think people are freaking out because they assume the tariffs are going straight to Xi's bank account xibe-check

I refuse to believe this magazine existed, this is just cursed michael-laugh

ULTIMATE PC GAMING AUTHORITY

For a magazine from 2007-2008 it's interesting how dated and 90s these covers feel. Like who the hell was still saying "frag" when Bioshock was coming out?

Orange Box? Left 4 Dead? These aren't even GFWL titles, come on guys

Hey, did you guys hear about the one about the console gamer and the girl? Neither did we. A little lesson in love, gentlemen: chicks don't dig guys who are behind the times. Sorry. But the good news is, when enhanced with a 3dfx Voodoo graphics accelerator, the performance and effects on your PC will kick the snot out of your console. Thus bringing you ahead of the times. So pick one up. Oh, and lose the headgear. They hate that too.

Imagine if Nvidia or AMD still made ads like this nowadays. If you don't buy an RTX 5090 that means your DICK is SMALL

Just when I thought I had acclimated to the high school visual novel part of Valkyria Chronicles 2, I get the classic anime trope of accidentally falling on someone's boobs with a side of possible transphobia

For context, the character being groped is male-presenting with their sex being listed as male in their bio and is referred to with male pronouns. I did notice his voice actor sounded female and wondered if that was going to come into play in his subplot. With the huge amount of squad mates in this game I was expecting to see at least some queer ones since I vaguely remember the first game having a few. I wasn't expecting this (though maybe I should have)

Anyway, he admits to being a woman at the end of this scene so I wonder if this is more of a Mulan situation than an instance of a trans character. Guess I'll see how this character's subplot concludes.

There's also a pair of female characters where one seems lesbian-coded and is the target of some vaguely homophobic abuse from fellow students though they seem to just be "close friends"

I guess 2010 was a pretty long time ago

When emulating games on an Android phone, I've noticed a few systems, like PS1 and PSP, suffering from intermittent stutters, usually when loading sound effects or music. On Duckstation you can see the FPS drop to half for about a second when this happens. I initially chalked this up to issues with the emulators themselves or my phone not being exactly top of the line, but then I thought about the nature of the stutters and began to wonder if the problems were caused by the ROMs being stored on an SD card.

I moved a game that had stuttering issues to the phone's internal storage and sure enough, the stutters were gone. Would getting a faster SD card help? Here are the card's stats:

  • Speed Class: 10 (10 MB/s)
  • UHS Speed Class: Class 1 (10MB/s)
  • UHS Bus Speed: UHS-1 (Up to 104MB/s)

It isn't exactly top of the line either, being the cheapest one I could get for the size and quite old on top of that. On the other hand, I also came across posts where people were saying SD card read speeds on Android are just generally bad, especially on more recent versions were they are hampered by some kind of new file access system.
