It simply restarts.๐Ÿ™‚

Short Answer: No, kernels are not snapshot ted

Long Answer: It's bit weird in my case.

Boot, EFI, Root are three separate partitions in my case.

Root mounts to /

Boot mounts to /Boot

Efi mounts to /boot/efi

It is this way because when I initially partitioned the EFI, I gave very less storage. But linux kernels are bigger than that. So, either I have move the partition. Which I didn't prefer because It'll take a lot of time and it said possibility of data loss.

So, I simply created new partition.

By default, CachyOS only snapshot /@ and /@/home. Which didn't include /boot because it's a separate partition it's own and not even BTRFS.

Yeah. I've been thinking about going back to Mint too. But the only thing stoping is that Arch is rolling distro. Which means I can get updates sooner. I mean linux gaming is getting better every day. I didn't like to be on lag for a year of improvements. Also Vavle investing lot on Arch.

I chose CachyOS, because it is made for gaming, it has decent GUI tools of its own and on top all that it's still Arch btw. So I can get benefits of Arch too.

Rolling distro can be both boon and bane. And now it didn't end up very well for me.

If you mean to ask why do i have to restore snapshot in the first place, I updated the system. And I didn't like the new update. First thing I noticed is Brave replaced all my group tabs to new tabs. When I searched about it, I came to know it's a common , critical issue that still haven't been solved๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Also Brave is now significantly slower now.

I also noticed few are wierd or not there at all. ( Plasma 6.3.1)

First of all thanks.

  1. I booted live Mint.

  2. Mounted btrfs partition.

  3. I renamed the backup (snapshot that btrfs assistant created while originally restoring before) to @.

Now my system boots but .snapshots are in original @ (which now I renamed as something else). I want those snapshots or delete altogether (for freeing up space).

  1. I tried to rsync old snaps to new @. It worked, but now I have delete the snaps from old @ (source of snaps). Which I cannot do for some reason. It says read only file system. I typed sudo btrfs property set -ts /path/to/snapshot ro false it retuned error cannot retrieve properties

  2. Then I tried to delete .snapshots subvolume altogether, but it says directory not empty.

I used sudo btrfs subvolume delete /path/to/.snapshots

(.snapshots is a separate subvol mounted on old @ subvol)

Now I have a working system but all my old snaps are stuck on old root. Which I cannot delete.

Idk what to do.๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

It does match.

I included refind_linux.conf and partition UUID already. Should I include fstab too?

  1. I just used BTRFS Assistant to restore. I did while the OS is on.

  2. I shared some on edited post. Pleae look.

  3. Idk for sure. But it shows my user name after I enter password. So, I think root?

[โ€“] gpstarman 3 points 3 months ago

UUID remains unchanged. And matches with both fstab and refind_linux.conf

Please see edited post.

did you try to restore the root partition while it was mounted to root?

If you mean to ask if I restored the OS subvol while I am on the OS itself. Then, yes.

But, I've done this before and it worked just fine.

Maybe boot up a linux from USB and restore the root partition from there?

(from live mint) I tried to rename the @ (root) to @_2 and original subvol backup to @. And booted. OS successfully boots. But now my root partition is @_2, which should be @ ?

And the OS was in the state of prior restoration i.e. after system update.

Also please look at the edited part of the post

I updated arch. After the update mangohud is not showing any GPU stats except GPU model.

I was working perfectly fine before.

I am using CachyOS (Arch btw) and when I tried to update using paru, it says some packages are in conflict, and asking to remove those. What should I do ?

I didn't find the best help from searching by myself ?

EXE icons out of nowhere (self.linux4noobs)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by gpstarman to c/linux4noobs@lemmy.world

I haven't updated my Arch (Plasma) for some time.

When I updated it yesterday, suddenly all the exe icons started to show up ( I'm dualbooting with Win ), which is not the case before.

As far I looked up, I can't find anything on internet.

I don't know if it's whether WINE or Dolphin or some other package.

So, what's changed ?

I want to hide the about tag in rEFInd. So, I did according to the info in config and website, which is to add a showtools line with no options.

And, nothing happens. I still see About, Shutdown, Reboot, Firmware tools in the rEFInd screen

# Default is shell,memtest,gdisk,apple_recovery,windows_recovery,mok_tool,about,hidden_tags,shutdown,reboot,firmware,fwupdate
# To completely disable scanning for all tools, provide a showtools line
# with no options.
#
#showtools shell, bootorder, gdisk, memtest, mok_tool, apple_recovery, windows_recovery, about, hidden_tags, reboot, exit, firmware, fwupdate
showtools

Eventhough the previous showtools line is a just a comment, I removed it too. And still nothing happens.

Does anybody have any idea?

I only want Shutdown, Reboot.

SOLVED

It seems like a rEFInd problem in latest version.

Looks like I have to edit and rebuild it myself. Unfortunately, I'm not really that familiar with building packages myself.

Guess, I have to wait it out.

I installed CachyOS with Plasma DE and found it has no discover in it. When I searched on their sub lots of people say that one shouldn't use Discover with any Arch distro as it will break the system. Can anybody clarify why?

Also if I am not supposed to use Discover, can anybody suggest an actual GUI application store? Unlike Octopi (which I consider just as a TUI with check boxes and columns)

Edit: I only use Discover for find and install new apps.

For updating, I just use paru.
