There's also the thing where the US will turn on your country if you ever try to be more independent. NATO isn't just a defence agreement, it's a subsidy to the US defence industry. It's the only explanation for countries willingly signing up to the F-35 programme.

Yeah, in the end of relies on good faith across all branches, which is obviously not where the US is right now. Mostly because representatives are isolated from their constituency as opposed to initially where you would have to actually deal with the people in your district.
I'm sure they can do it stuff to make your life difficult until they get paid, however.
Yeah, I read the article and it makes more sense to me now. I imagined he would be travelling with them, but that obviously wasn't the case.
It's like taxes, they probably already know, but they make you fill out the form so they can either catch you out if you forget one, or add it to the list if you give one they didn't know about.
